A man threatening to harm himself at a Phillip petrol station in the early hours of Monday morning (29 October) shut down Melrose Drive in both directions for several hours as police negotiated with the troubled man.

Around 2:15 am, police were called to an incident at BP petrol station, where a 34-year-old man was threatening to self-harm.

Police blocked Melrose Drive in both directions between intersections of Hindmarsh Drive and Eggleston Crescent and told motorists to avoid the area.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said specialist negotiators engaged with the man, who peacefully surrendered five hours later.

The man was taken into custody but no charges have been laid at this time.
