Markets, where do they come from where do they go?

Homeless 10 December 2010 13

I am a bit of a fan of markets, not the fresh food type, the craft markets. I discovered the Old Bus Depot markets a while back. Then I stumbled across the Gorman House markets which is more my style. There’s great stuff at the Old Bus Depot markets, but some of it is very pricey, and I’m almost always on a small budget. I’ve heard about the Hall markets, and possibly one in Weston Creek. I’ve seen some sort of second hand market in a car park at Woden and even encountered the Captain’s Flat market once too.

So, when and where are markets held? I know only of the following:

Old Bus Depot markets, every Sunday in the old bus depot around the Kingston foreshores. But in the run up to Christmas, it occurs every Saturday too?

Gormon House markets, held every Saturday 10am – 3 pm at Gorman House off Ainslie Street, Anslie. But parking there is impossible so I park elsewhere and walk in.

Hall markets, somewhere in Hall, not sure when but seems to be on Sundays, possibly first Sunday each month?

Anyone else out there who can provide better and more accurate details of when the craft markets are held?

I love Gorman House Markets, it’s got a wonderful intellectual atmosphere. This Sat (2 March 2013) will be the first day my not-for-profit business (Global Handmade) sells at the markets, and I sell fairly traded, exotic, culturally inspired and handmade products from developing countries. Full profits are used to help people in need. I believe Gorman House is the perfect place for my business. Not everyone appreciates handmade things, but for those who do, we simply love them!

Then again, I don’t have kids, perhaps some of the baby clothes made out of fluffy scraps by grandmothers with no skills other than collecting bits of fabric becomes desirable to pregnancy-hormone-addled brains.

Hmmmm…I don’t have children and I don’t have a ‘pregnancy-hormone-addled brain(!)’ but somehow I managed to find some lovely, reasonably priced jewellery, a handmade funky brooch, a scented candle made of soy, a stack of handmade cards and a gorgeous fascinator for the races. Each to their own.

Well, if you like that sort of thing…

I went there once, most of the stuff was crap. The only thing I liked was some of this one lady’s jewellery, but not the cheap stuff – the custom-made $1000+ platinum stuff which would take several months of designing.

You could ask the Anthoula’s Bakery guy (weetangera bakery), he seems to have a stall at every single one.

Gunning also has a once a month market, as does Tuggeranong homestead.

And there is a tiny market in from of KAtmandu’s old shop (near electric shadows former spot), on thursday mornings – 2 vegie stalls and a hat/scarf/jewellery stall.
