National Tally Room in Canberra

By Jazz - 21 November 2007 5

Here at Riot we just received the following media release:

The Australian Electoral Commission’s National Tally Room in the Budawang Building, Exhibition Park (EPIC), will be open to the public from 5pm on Saturday 24 November.

Media Director Phil Diak said tickets were not required for public entry to the National Tally Room, however there would be security checks including x-ray scanning at the entrance.

“While members of the public are welcome to visit the National Tally Room, they should be aware that there may be a queue and a wait to enter the building.

The National Tally Room is a venue for the media to broadcast election results live on television and radio. ”

The Australian Electoral Commission will have detailed results online in the Virtual Tally Room (VTR), at www.aec.gov.au where everyone can view the latest election results. The VTR will update every 90 seconds on election night and display results across approximately 1200 individual pages on-screen.

For more information about the National Tally Room, the Virtual Tally Room and the 2007 federal election visit www.aec.gov.au or call the AEC on 13 23 26.

I went. It was the first time I’d been to the tally room. Was a great experience to be there as government was changing hands before our eyes.

Was also mildly amusing seeing Kerry O’Brien and Antony Green getting rather agitated. Although, I can understand why they were.

though the VTR you can see information down to polling station level.
IE: Karabar and surrounds say “Go Libs!”, but the towns of Narooma, Eden and others all say Labor, even though they make up segments of Eden-Monaro.

I posted this under previous thread on whether the Tally Room would be open, but advice still relevant.

“There’s usually a line up of people trying to get into the public viewing gallery at the Tally Room at EPIC so get there early.
Expect tight security (there was last time post 9/11). Also consider taking in water as it gets hot with all the TV lights in a warehouse during the Canberra summer. But its worth the line up just to see the Chaser boys harrasing the politicans on the media comment panels.”

Its also worth packing a mini radio and headphones so you know where the election results are up to. You can’t hear whats happening on the TV panels (the sets are too far away from public area). Have fun.

Oh goody, I soooo want to go there (either physically or virtually) instead of just finding out through the idiot box who will be my representative after they finish counting and re-counting.
