The next step in the multi-million-dollar project to upgrade the Nelligen Bridge has arrived, with work on two elements now complete.
The upgraded road alignment between Thule Road and Reid Street has recently been opened, and the Kings Highway and Wharf Street intersection has also been opened in its new arrangement.
Member for Bega Dr Michael Holland said the end of the $148 million project was close at hand.
“As the Nelligen Bridge project nears the final stages of completion, the finer details of stitching it seamlessly into the Nelligen landscape have begun with the alignment of existing roads to the approach of the new bridge,” he said.
“Motorists and road users are asked to take care and adhere to road signs and speed limits.
“We thank everyone for their patience as this project is developed into a significant asset for the Kings Highway.”
According to Transport for NSW, the Kings Highway is a key pathway, connecting the ACT and Queanbeyan area with the South Coast, as well as Nelligen with the Eurobodalla Shire.

The works are part of a project to construct a new two-lane bridge on the Kings Highway where it crosses the Clyde River at Nelligen, on the NSW South Coast, as well as a community space.
The new bridge opened ahead of schedule to motorists in February 2023.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said the upgrades would mean increased safety for motorists during their travels.
“The Nelligen Bridge Replacement project commenced in 2021, improving safety, reliability and travel times while providing great new community spaces for all to enjoy,” she said.
“The new alignment we announce today improves safety by providing an improved curve on the eastern side of the bridge, wider lanes and shoulders, and safety barriers between the road and footpath.
“When the western foreshore community space is completed, residents and visitors will be able to take advantage of newly installed picnic shelters, tables, handrails and interpretative signage.”
Most of the remaining demolition work is expected to be finished by the end of the year, while work on the Thule Road cul-de-sac and the foreshore community spaces are expected to be completed in 2024.
