Thanks to Craig for sending this one in…

“One for the insect lovers. Saw this strangely patterned fly(?) in the backyard today. It’s about the size of a blowfly. A search of CSIRO, google etc didn’t show anything that had these kinds of patterns. I assume that the markings are a kind of false head to keep away predators or to stop magpies swooping on bike paths?”

Are they endangered species and do they nest on the proposed light rail route?
