Apparently in the interminable bitchfights surrounding the festival thing the two year tradition of “Opera By The Lake” fell by the wayside with, I’m told, the first thing Stopera (Canberra’s chamber opera company) knew was when the festival program was printed without their event on it.
But not to fear opera lovers! The Canberra Times now brings word that Stopera is putting on a self-funded show on 8 February at Stage 88.
It’s not like the “National Multicultural Festival” brand brings in many punters anyway. (Which is not to say some components of the festival do not succeed despite the affiliation).
Tickets can be had from the Street Theatre. Opera Near The Lake is officially glorying in the title of “Opera By Candlelight”.
UPDATED: Apologies, the new production appears to be by “Opera Highlights” rather than Stopera.
FURTHER UPDATED: The following charming message has just been sent in:
- Please correct your incorrect info on Opera near the Lake/Opera By Candlelight. Stopera has no association whatsoever with the event Opera By Candlelight taking place on Stage 88 Sunday 8 Feb 2009. The event Opera By The Lake as presented in 2007 & 2008 and attended by thousands of Canberrans has no association with the Opera by Candlelight event either. People who are thinking of attending Opera by Candlelight should be aware of this. I did send this info to you with our media release statement on the whole issue when your site got in contact with me some time ago. Also having read some comments, Stopera is NOT currently funded in any way by the ACT Government or any other funding source and has not been very several years and has only had sporadic project funding over its entire history. we have never had any permanent or secure or longterm funding.
