Overheard … any clues?

I-filed 22 September 2008 31

Overheard at the counter at Tilleys today:

” … if it goes into double digits, Mount Ainslie will be cleared and then …” (then the background noise got too loud to hear any more)

The speaker was a man about 5’9″, fairly thin, swarthy, curly greying dark hair cropped short, wearing a cheap pinstriped suit (or a suit he paid too much for).

His companion was a young woman, looked like his secretary perhaps, wearing a cinched-in grey cardigan and with blond tips in her hair.

I didn’t hear any more. Any clues? Something to do with the NCA’s demise? Is Mt Ainslie’s protection from development under threat? What could ‘double digits’ refer to? Election talk?

^^^ Oh bwahahahahaha! Nice one, that actually made me laugh out loud and look like a complete twit to the the rest of the office.

Of course, we all know that the daily number of visitors to Brand Depot will *never* reach double digits so its a moot point.

“…if it goes into double digits, Mount Ainslie will be cleared and then …”

My guess as to what this conversation means is that if daily visitor numbers to Brand Depot reach double figures, then Mt Ainslie will be dug out to make way for more Snowtown Bargain Basement Warehouses.

I think it’s a joke in reference to “Overheard at the counter at Tilleys today: “

That’s the way I read it. Ha ha, Gungahlin Al. For the record I was not the man in black with his digits up Mount Ainslie.

The day they build on Mt Ainslie will be the day I decide to leave this city.

“When I looked across at Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura I have wondered, how long will it be before these bushlands will be covered in appartments and new commercial zones as Canberra grows…”

When, perhaps, the smug pencil-pushers who run this dump get real.

Canberra’s planners don’t seem to realise that there was this little thing called an oil shock a generation ago. This tiny town s-p-r-a-w-l-s.

That makes it more expensive to provide infrastructure. Ditto public transport.

It forces people into cars and forces them to use more fuel than they would somewhere better designed.

It creates higher public and higher private costs – and puts higher levels of stress on the environment.

Build on Mt Ainslie.

As long as I can remember, when I looked across at Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura I have wondered, how long will It be before these bushlands will be covered in appartments and new commercial zones as Canberra grows. I don’t really think that prime real estate will go un-developed, as history has shown us, nothing gets in the way of progress, especially not greenies. Oh Mount Ainslie will be “cleared” alright, its just a matter of time.

If you feel strongly enough about this to post here then why didn’t you poke your nose right in and ask them directly what they were talking about? Really…

double digits? it’s the economy, stoopid. well, inflation. patently, if the economy dives and the inflation figures hit double digits again it means the treasurer’s arse will fly from the house on the hill to clear over mt ainslie in the fit of pique 24/7 kevin will enter in a green rage, with motor malcolm stalking him in the polls… sheesh, how obvious. it goes on, ‘…and then… kevin will give the job to someone who knows what to do: belinda neal. iguanagate will be forgiven and she’ll have to have john della’hubby in her team to make sure she gets it sooo right, just like they did in new south wa…’ (it all goes a bit fuzzy now…)

Don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Surely if Campbell park was developed they would have to move the airport to reduce noise complaints.

fhakk Campbell Park sounds like a possible explanation, thanks. The ‘double digits’ shall remain a mystery. And the remnant sclerophyll forest can feel safe for now.
Anyone who remembers the Town Planners’ drawings of Mt Ainslie covered in O’Malley-esque dwellings a few years back, and the Land people rubbing their hands with glee until the Territories minister intervened, would be shuddering with me, not laughing at me! But feel free! 🙂

I was speaking to someone from the Watson Residents Association – they’re fighting developers who are keen to see houses built on the foothills of Mount Majura, East of Antill Street in Watson.

That might be it…unless they’re talking about developing the eastern flank of Mount Ainslie and getting rid of Campbell Park.

Holden Caulfield Holden Caulfield 3:20 pm 22 Sep 08

Maybe they’re finally going to build that road at the back of Mt Ainslie that will link Gungahlin to the Eastern side of the city?

Haha, won’t the nimbies go off if that ever goes ahead.

S4anta, this crazy dude is in fact your local public service psychologist … a little respect, please!

I meet the Queanbeyan river guardian 30 years ago when I was flown into Canberra for a job interview as a psychologist with the public service. She, a river nymph, covered me in a feeling of reassurance and told me that I had the job. She came along to the interview and filled the room with a radiant light, perhaps she influenced the committee members? I got the job, which included a relocation allowance, and I have stayed around Canberra ever since.

*guffaw*

So this is how the interview process works ….

Gungahlin Al said :

Double digits – clearly global warming.
Mt Ainslie being cleared – the reverse of the tree-line as desertification creeps across our landscape, as with double digit temperature increases, clearly only the Alps will have trees left…

And Overheard – what you doing in Tilleys?

I thought it was I-filed, not overheard??
