With news of London’s “fatberg” delighting the world our own Actew Water are asking us to think about how to avoid it here:
“Our teams actively target hotspots around the city, identifying sewer chokes, blockages, and areas where roots may have infiltrated the network. We also specifically target the sewer infrastructure around restaurants and takeaways where fats and grease may build up. By taking a proactive approach we have managed to reduce sewer chokes by 60%; this is more than double our original goal.”
ACTEW Water is investing millions of dollars each year to improve the sewer network and protect the natural environment of our bush capital. We need our customers to support us by taking care in what they pour down their sinks and put into their dishwashers.
We advise customers to safely allow fats and grease to cool before they scrape plates, pots and pans. Once cooled these fats can be collected and correctly disposed of with household rubbish.
Where’s their sense of ambition? Where are the plans for our own bigger and better fatberg?
It’s a good thing we’re well used to disappointment around here.
