Police catch driver on phone with dog on lap

Lachlan Roberts 7 September 2018 4

ACT Policing have caught a driver who had a small dog on their lap and was driving with one hand while using a mobile phone on Tuesday evening.

Police pulled over the offender, travelling on Coulter Drive, Belconnen, around 5 pm on Tuesday, 4 September. Infringements were issued for driving using a hand-held mobile phone and driving with an animal on lap totalling $670 in fines and the loss of 3 demerit points.

Police would like to remind all drivers that “road safety is everybody’s responsibility and that anything a driver does that takes their attention away from the road could have tragic consequences for all involved”.

I think I saw this driver an hour or so earlier down at the better end of Hindmarsh Drive. The vehicle I saw was a white VW Golf with tinted windows and a matching fluffy white dog. I must say, they (driver and dog) somehow managed to keep the car going in the correct lane even though the dog had its snout hanging out the drivers window. But, if something untoward happened the reaction time would in my opinion certainly be compromised.

I see it all the time..... how do you drive a car with a dog on your lap resting on your arm and usually with it's head out the window.... i love my dog to much to allow her to be unrestrained in a vehicle
