- ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an attempted robbery which occurred at The Maram nightclub in Wanniassa yesterday (February 9).
Around 7.25pm a 31-year-old woman was at the Denigan Street address when a man entered the premises and attempted to steal her laptop. A struggle ensued between the woman and the offender over the laptop. The offender then released his grip on the laptop and pushed the woman causing her to fall to the ground. She did not suffer any injuries.
The offender ran down the stairs, exited the nightclub and was seen running towards a mobile service station on Ashley Drive.
The offender is described as being aged in his late teens to early 20s, of Caucasian appearance, around 175cm (5’9”) tall and had short dark hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt with a circle logo on the front and black knee-length shorts.
General duties and Specialist Response and Security (SRS) Dog Team officers conducted a search of the area but did not observe anyone matching the offender’s description.

2. Bloody firebugs on the loose:
- ACT Policing has arrested two male youths after they were observed by members of the public lighting a grass fire in Mawson yesterday morning (February 9).
The ACT Fire Brigade attended the grass fire, behind the Southland shops, about 10.30am yesterday (February 9). The fire was quickly extinguished.
The fire was lit in close proximity to neighbouring businesses, including a petrol station.
Police inquiries are continuing into the incident, with a view to possible charges being laid.
A second deliberately lit fire was reported to ACT Policing this morning (February 10) after an 18-year-old man returned to his Stirling residence about 12.30am to find a small fire alight near his front door.
The man managed to put the fire out with water before it caused any damage to his Crowder Circuit home. Inquiries are continuing into the incident.
ACT Policing also responded to three deliberately lit fires in grassland behind the suburb of Fadden about 10.00am on February 8. The small fires were extinguished quickly by the ACT Fire Brigade.
ACT Policing A/Superintendent South District Bob Wynn has issued a stern warning to potential fire-bugs in light of the on going tragedy in Victoria.
“It is shocking to think that some of the fires burning in Victoria and NSW over the last few days may have been deliberately lit. This is something that police will not tolerate, and we will act swiftly, utilising a full range of resources and legislative options, to identify and deal with any people responsible for such an act.”
“Prior incidents have shown us that these people like to light fires in reasonably public places, and as a vigilant community we can ensure that our suburbs are protected,” A/Supt Wynn said.
“Obviously if a fire has been lit and can not be extinguished straight away, the ACT Fire Brigade should be contacted in the first instance,” he said.
