Police Wrap – 12 May

By johnboy - 12 May 2009 17

1. A little security never hurts when banking the takings:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a robbery at Westfield Shoppingtown, Belconnen yesterday (May 11).

About 3.30pm police attended a jewellery store at the shopping centre in response to reports of a burglary. The female victim, an employee of the store, stated that while carrying a bag containing sum of money to the ANZ Bank, located on the third floor of the shopping centre, a male person snatched the bag and fled on foot towards the exit on the lakeside of the centre.

The male offender is described as being dark skinned, wearing a blue and white striped hooded jumper, black tracksuit pants tucked into his socks and a grey hat.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen any suspicious persons or activity in the Westfield Belconnen area around the time of the offence to contact Crime Stoppers.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

I must be that I am half asleep, but I just relasied that you meant 18 YEARS ago. But for some reason I thought you meant 18 MONTHS ago. But then again, I am surprised that that amount of money was carried around.

About 18 years ago I used to work for a public service department and it was my job to drive myself from Barton to the Reserve Bank in Civic and cash cheque(s) for Petty Cash and/or Travel Allowance advances and then drive myself back with a briefcase containing up to $20K in cash. No consideration for my safety (or the money for that matter) was ever thought of. I guess society is generally a lot more violent and lawless these days so back then it wasn’t that much of an issue.

I would of thought that this money would go into a Government Department Account & this cash would be transfered via bank trasfer. As imagine to what could happen. But then again the Reserve Bank is really classified as a bank like the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Even if you did have 2 staff members to take the cash to the bank, common sense would be putting the cash bag inside a inconspicuous bag, pretty much any bag or backpack would do.

Whenever I’ve done banking for work, I carry the bag in my backpack & just act like any normal person. I also take a bus that is also empty by the time it gets to the town centre in question, so the driver just drops my off 2/3 doors down.

more importantly – why on earth would you tuck your tracksuit pants into your socks!!

It’s a symptom of being a wanker.

Having worked in Belconnen mall and regularly doing the banking, I discovered that some stores don’t have the staff capacity to send 2 people to do the banking. Hence why only one person would go. I would normally stick the takings in my handbag so it wasn’t as obvious to what i was up to.

What I also don’t understand is to why they are asking for witnesses ?? Pretty sure they would have it on camera.

LOL! Only if Westfield have finally invested some of their $$$ on decent security, Genie. My wife ran a major chain store in the Mall for almost 20 years. One morning about 7 years ago we had a call at 4:30am saying her shop had been broken into. Not only was the store broken into by the thieves had enough time to dig the safe out of the concrete floor! The nearby butcher told us when we arrived it was him that found the door broken open and the store a mess (BTW: the corridors behind the shops are a rat infested disgrace). It took him a good half hour to summon security, which was regarded by many at that time to be an absolute joke. In the end the total of shops broken into in that single night was around the 15 mark. ‘Security’ knew nothing about it. In fact, it was determined that one of the loading dock side doors had been left unlocked allowing access to someone that shouldn’t have had it. There were certainly no camera’s then.

Call me stupid, but wouldn’t you go in pairs to take the day’s takings, and carry the bag securely on your persons? Clearly the female has never had her purse snatched.

back in the day, when i did deliveries to various retail jewellry stores, the brown bag i carried had a cuff with a lock on it and a chain attaching it to the bag. bit extreme, but I guess the retailers didn’t want their goods stolen.

when we did the banking, 2 of us would go. the “bag” we used was a belt under my jacket.

I know these people aren’t the smartest in the world, but if the robbery occured near the ANZ bank, wouldn’t you make your getaway through the nearby exit, instead of running all the way through the Mall

I wonder if the girls boyfriend is dark skinned, wearing a blue and white striped hooded jumper, black tracksuit pants tucked into his socks and a grey hat?

But I’m sure the cops would have thought of that already.

I had to do the banking for a job years ago. I was initially a little worried about being given a bag with a *big* westpac logo on it to take to the bank each day, eventually I was able to get a different bag – unfortunately my request for a duffle bag with ‘swag’ emblazzoned on it was not accepted.

My boss made me alternate the way I would walk to the bank – I found this kind of amusing, somehow couldn’t picture a ‘Heat’ style heist for the couple of hundred dollars I was carrying, any theft would have been opportunistic.
