1. Bad Gran:

ACT Policing has arrested and charged a 67-year-old female for spitting on two police officers earlier today (Tuesday September 21).

Around 11am police were called to Akuna Street to check the welfare of the female. The female was verbally abusive towards police and staff at the YHA Youth Hostel and became highly aggressive, refusing to comply with police directions.

The woman was taken into custody which she resisted, continuing to swear at the police officers. As she was being placed into the caged police vehicle the woman has spat directly on the patrol Sergeant, which landed in his eye. Another officer was also spat on by the woman.

Both police officers will undergo blood tests for analysis.

The woman has been charged with one count of assaulting a commonwealth official and one count of cause harm to a commonwealth official. She will face the Magistrates Court this afternoon.

She will go to court and get off with mental health issues, they all do.

Farq – once again you have displayed your colours and unfortunately I think you simply have no idea at all about the realities of life and the role of Police. There was no mention of mental health playing a part in this incident. Care to explain how you formed this opinion? While you are at it, who better than the Courts and Police to physically protect the community from people who may suffer from mental health issues when they become violent?

Bigred – you were breaking up a possible fight, assuming here that you knew one/some of the people involved, and you got ‘spat upon’ and spoke to the Police? I don’t think you are telling us everything here.

Happy fishing both of you…

In the US you can be sentenced to life imprisonment for spitting in the face of a policeman

I haven’t had much to do with police, but I reckon police do a good job.

While assisting to calm down an escalating and potentially ugly situation not that long ago I got spat on by some bogan. Plod said “what do you want us to do about it?” And plod gets spat upon and they arrest someone. mmm wondering, just wondering if I could get them to provide same response?

Waiting for Farq to patrol the mean streets of Canberra as a mental health sheriff.

“I am the law. No – hang on: I am the STARFISH..no, that’s not quite right either. Stuff it, I’ll blame the fuzz…everyone else does!”

Another reason why the police and legal system are not the people to handle mental health issues.

I hope the charges are dropped, no point punishing someone for a health issue.

farq the fisherman! I’ll bite. If the mental health service in the ACT wasn’t such a shambles, they (police) would not have to deal with mental health issues as often. But as buzz819 already said, there’s no mention of mental health issues in this case.

There’s no mention of whether she is an overseas tourist or a local bag lady. Was she trying to gain accommodation or being ejected from such? What single issue led her to get pissed at the plod?
To spit in someones face is either a cultural issue or mental health, surely?

Pretty sure the police aren’t qualified to do an on-the-spot mental health assessment to determine whether they should arrest someone or just write them a referral. If she’s got a genuine mental health issue then it will be dealt with by the time she gets to court.

WTF? Where in there does it say that she has a mental problem? She could have been drunk, high or just a bitch?

Why should the charges be dropped? That officer has to put up with a couple of months worth of blood tests, which could result in him having any number of yummy infections or diseases.

Would have been a totally different out cry if she went and spat on other people and Police did nothing….
