Queanbeyan wants Tralee

By johnboy - 25 July 2011 19

The Canberra Times brings word of mass protests in Jerrabomberra in favour of the Tralee development.

Apparently it will solve all their woes.

What’s Your opinion?

Forget Tralee, bring back Environa. At least it’s already on Google Maps.

I didn’t say there was anything wrong with Q-town. I was just pointing out that people I have met who live in Jerrabomberra seem to be offended by the suggestion their very prestigious address is part of Queanbeyan – and I find that pretty amusing.

We have shops, servo, gym, hairdressers, restuarant, tavern, playing fields, etc. We also have nice sized blocks and streets, and no bad areas.

Jerra also has smugness by the truckload.
I love raising the ire of a Jerra resident by pointing out they live in Queanbeyan.

What’s wrong with Queanbeyan? It has far more character and community feel than most of Canberra, and is closer to the middle of Canberra than lots of ACT suburbs!

I’m a Canberran born & bred, recently moved to Queanbeyan and I LOVE it there! I still take the piss out of it, of course – but in reality I feel safer and happier there than I have in many ACT suburbs. Having said that, I have lived in quite dodgy ACT suburbs!

But on topic, keeping in mind I have done limited research into this, I do think the Tralee debate is 100% about money-making and would undoubtedly turn into a major issue within a few years. Canberra Airport, whilst apparently run by pure evil, is important to both NSW & ACT and it WILL continue to grow and become busier as the years go by. When the need arises for a busier flight schedule and/or the return of flights at unfortunate hours of the night – how are Tralee residents going to react to that??

But that won’t be VBC’s problem, will it….

. . . and we don’t.

Well since you turned it into an us and them thing.

And Queanbeyan never wanted the gaol there but it still went in. And we don’t want you driving through our city on the way to the coast.

Why should we take into consideration what the ACT wants, they never have any regard for us.

I love when it becomes us vs them. NSW could do so much more harm to the ACT than the ACT could ever do to NSW. Look in the comments of the above link, some tool starts on about road upgrades and as is pointed out to him we could disconnect the power and make it real difficult for ACT drivers to ever leave the territory. Of course that won’t happen because NSW isn’t as petty as some…

I don’t see why some piss ant little airport has so much power over the people. More affordable housing anywhere in the Canberra region is only going to be a good thing, after the ACT glorified council are never going to do anything about housing affordability.

Gee, and I thought Canberra had STS (Small town syndrome)! Hahahaha! 🙂
Anyway, yes, what we all need is more housing directly under a runway flight path. Sounds awesome – I know I’ll be the first to secure one of these beauties when they come on the market! We need to fight for our right to live under an industrial hairdryer! Of course, when I buy my block i’ll be the first to say: “hey, whst’s with all this ‘plane noise?!?!?”. As for affordable, I’ll see it when I believe it.
BTW, what’s with Jerra? How did developers manage to get so many people to buy a block/house in the middle of nowhere, with no facilities (even a decade later)?? Was that the beta-testing prototype for Gungahlin? Hahaha! Just joking, people…..!

About the only thing Jerra is missing is a high school.

We have shops, servo, gym, hairdressers, restuarant, tavern, playing fields, etc. We also have nice sized blocks and streets, and no bad areas.

And yes, I live in Jerra.

So you Shelbyville residents would rather drive to Sydney to catch a flight?

It’s amazing that the capital of Australia doesn’t have international flight access.
Even just NZ and Singapore would open up the world.

Buy people, I assume you mean the small group of rich people who stand to become very rich by developing this site?

I never figured out why people in Shelbyville Queanbeyan had a problem with the Gaol. The only really problem is the F%#@ing retarded set of traffic lights they put on the highway out the front of it.

Nothing quite like a politician’s short-term (ie: this election cycle and maybe the next one) financial interest destroying later economic opportunities…
Immediate boost to house prices for the house-owning few, or longer-term growth of the economy?

Add to this the new industrial estate less than 100 metres from established QBN homes.

There was also an alternative location for the gaol, but the ACT had to throw its weight around.

ACT and NSW could be pragmatic and considerate neighbours, but clearly ACT doesn’t want that. So I hope you all enjoy noise sharing when it gets implemented.

Jerra wants Tralee because it means there will be a Jerra High School. At the moment there’s a primary school with up to 6 classes from kindy to year 6, and those kids have to go to school somewhere. Given the socio-economic makeup of Jerra, many parents would prefer their kids to go to ACT schools (with lots going to private schools).

If there was a Jerra High School, many of the kids coming through Jerra Primary would go there instead.

Theres apparently a school going in right next to Hume industrial area. Given this area has adult shops and other noisy dirty businesses, you’d have to wonder why put the school right there. Also I read something about 40% of kids in jerra going to school in Canberra. Probably because for all intents and purposes they are Canberran ie parents work in Canberra, kids always gone to school in Canberra. NSW gov makes it a little cheaper to buy across the border and they move there.

The issue is regardless of whether there is noise now or ever, the losers will be everyone else as soon as the first complaint for noise comes in. It happened with Jerra with flightpaths to share the noise…..
