we are using Karen Dean cakes and are paying $400 for a moderately decorated 3 tier cake in May this year. She came highly recommended by a friend and was good to deal with and listened to what we wanted.

A decently decorated cake suitable for a wedding is going to set you back about $300+. Most of that is obviously labour, and works out at around $20/hr given the effort that goes into something as simple as a tiered marzipan and flat white wedding cake.

You may find cheaper, but the lower cost will only come from lower build quality.
