Rivett Lock Down… or not?

jamius maximus 11 April 2006 14

I have just been informed by my girlfriend (who received an email sent around her Department) that Rivett has been locked down and blocked off by the police. 666 ABC radio is reporting on the situation and will advise when people can enter the suburb.

Is this for real or some kind of late april fools prank? I can’t get 666 at work.

UPDATE: Looks like it is for real. FM104.7 says no one is in any danger.

ABC story

[Ed – Lenny wrote in with the following]

Apparenlty Rivett is in full lock down, the police have closed it off and their are police running around in bullet proff jackets, anyone have details?

UPDATED: The Person of Interest is now talking to police according to the 7.00 ABC news, and their website.

FURTHER UPDATE: The Google news roundup is here.

UPDATE 12-APR-06: The ABC reports a man has been charged with threatening to kill, possessing a drug of dependence and damaging property over the incident. The CT has these two two stories about it all (one of them is a people story about the kids at school). They seem to have done battle with the police media spokesperson as well as talking to someone who managed to stay in the house next door to the raids and other neighbours.

I think the funniest thing is that they were still looking for him…. even though he handed himself in at 5:30pm at the Woden Police Station.

SMH article here

Salvatore “Sammy” Strano, 40, faced three charges in the ACT Magistrates Court, including threatening to kill, damaging a car and possession of amphetamines.

I was in Sydney for the Stones concert and it made the Sydney news.

Except they didn’t say what suburb. When they Rivett it all made sense.

VG, the public would not be smart enough to know what Ballistic vests are. Remember, they’ve been brought up on a diet of American TV where they are always referred to as flak jackets. Not that you’re going to get a lot of anti aircraft fire in Canberra.

Come to think of it I used to call them flak jackets when we used to do search and cordon or roadblock Exes with RAInf.

Perhaps the coppers get just as lost as I do every time they go for a gander in westies creek.

TAD – perhaps I should have also refered more to the ‘lockdown’ of the area as well in my query, as it seemed to alarm a lot of people…and I’m not an expert in Police SOP’s hence the question.

My bad. Sorry for being a dickhead

TAD needs a hug.

Perhaps they are looking for something dickhead

Curious about that Chris S – how is that 5 hours after he handed himself into the Woden shop, the bobbies were still continuing to scope the property at Rivett?

Something a bit strange happened, as Rivett was locked down for several hours, but later in the afternoon, the bloke concerned walked into the Woden cop shop. Somehow he seems to have got out of the cordon (or was never in it).

I love the reports mentioning Police wearing ‘flak jackets’. They’re called ballistic vests, we aren’t fighting at the Battle of the Bulge!

Nothing like the Canberra press to overinflate an incident

SMH says AFP looking for Person of Interest regarding a threat made in another Canberra suburb. POI is believed to be in a residence in Rivett currently. Although the SMH also reports of officers searching the streets and dogs etc suggests that the person may be on the move not in a residence.
