Rose Cottage Markets

What I was expecting

Dropped by the Rose Cottage Markets on Saturday, hoping rather than expecting a small but bustling hive of locally produced goods nestled amongst the gardens of the Old Rose Inn.

The site has always had a chequered commercial history, never quite hitting the mark as a destination location and not really en route to anywhere. Businesses seem to come and go with regretful regularity. The Inn itself appeared to have some events on as there were a number of glossy people climbing out of their equally glossy cars, clutching presents.

Sadly the Market itself had been relegated across the road and there were few stalls and fewer customers. A speed circuit revealed stalls selling plants, jewelry, craft, knitted goods, honey and candles.

I fear that this will be another enterprise that will fold with as little fanfare as it started with.

I attended the markets on the weekend as a stall holder and the stall fees were only $10, not $50. It was horrible weather and I was told by other stall holders that there were 25 plus stalls last month. I will be attending again in May and I will have my fingers crossed that the other stalls will show up next month.

I’m a regular stakeholder at other markets around Canberra. Every time I have enquired about this market I have been quoted $50 for a site.

Also other stall holders I have chatted to have mentioned the same thing….

Hmmmmmmm

Gorgeous venue for a wedding, having been to one there . . . and the garden does look a pleasant place for a happy hour. Not sure that a market would work though.

Market stall holders are charged $50+ to hold a stall… Given most other markets charge significantly less you’ll be hard pressed to ever get a large amount of stalls there..

Yeah – the typo thing – I really want to replace ‘regretful’ with ‘regrettable’.

The “under New Management” sign was virtually permanent. Hoepfully it will get its own workable niche one day.

I have seen these signs at the weekends and wondered whether its worth it, but you always know that it will be a few stall holders flogging a few dodgy looking plants and not much else.

We went to Rose Cottage a few times in the 2011 Summer – probably not long after it first started advertising the new and improved beer garden. At first it was ok as not many poeple had caught on, but over time it just got really crowded and a little bit bogan. It’s a shame because it could be a nice spot to sit and relax, maybe listen to a bit of decent music that doesn’t drown out the conversation (and not the average bands they have on there already).

The notice board outside always catches my attention as it regularly has very bad typos. If it wasn’t such a crappy place to stop I would have snapped a few for RA. Only adds to the boganness when you see that the people running the joint can’t spell.

Had better now go and check my post for typos!
