Simon Corbell is not letting the caretaker convention get between himself and his ministerial letterhead.

Today he’s unveiled a master plan for the vexed Erindale group centre complete with a transport hub:

Shoppers and workers at the Erindale group centre are set to benefit from an extra 1200 car spaces, a new bus station, better walking and cycling connections and a possible second supermarket, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, said today.

Mr Corbell unveiled the final master plan for the Erindale centre today which aims to boost car parking over the life of the master plan to make it easier for shoppers to park in the short, medium and long term.

“This master plan will give Erindale centre the breath of fresh air to sustain a growing population as well as continued viability of retail and business uses in the centre,” Mr Corbell.

“The plan is focused around the development of a new transport hub including a new Rapid bus station with park and ride facilities and the relocation of the local bus stop to provide better transport links into the city and other town centres.

“It outlines better ways for people to access and move around the group centre, with a focus on improving transport links for buses, cars, pedestrians and bikes.

Wanniassa’s enthusiasm for bicycles and public transport being the first thing one notices in that part of Canberra.

A new full-line supermarket could be included? Please tell me that would only be an expansion of the existing Woolies store. Why would you even consider an additional supermarket at Erindale when you have 4 competitors (and another Woolworths) within a 5 minute drive (Coles Tuggeranong, Aldi Tuggeranong, Coles Chisholm and Wanniassa Supabarn)???

… oh, apart from the cash from land sales and developers’ fees and charges of course…

RAPID bus route for erindale?

Does that mean the tuggers rapid will have to spend an extra 20 minutes going though windy waniassa on the way to civic?

Whats the sense in doing that when tuggeranong is massively under utilised.

Why not put some of those 1200 car spaces in places where people actually work.

At present the 15 minute driver from tuggeranong to belconnen takes an hour and fifteen minutes on the bus going though erindale.

Finally, this has been a long time coming and it’s been needed even longer. It’s great to see that someone is willing to do something instead of just talking about it!!!

The Labor Party appears to has suddenly woken up to how neglected the infrastructuure in the Tuggeranong valley is – master plans for Tuggers AND Erindale, AND a pretend CIT. Possibly too little, too late though . . .
