There are many benefits to eating seasonal, organic fruit and vegetables – both for one’s health and the environment but for the consumer it can be overwhelming trying to source such products.

In recent times, various companies have created ready-made fruit and vegetable boxes in the hope of making this process easier.

The Gathered Green is one such company which has just started servicing the Canberra region.

Based in Young, the business has been operating since November 2015 with the aim to provide “fresh, tasty and locally grown produce.”

Customers have the option to subscribe to a weekly or fortnightly box filled with fruit and vegetables primarily sourced from the Young region and its surrounds.

Locally grown was an important factor for founder and owner of The Gathered Green, Jane Reid who said she was disappointed to find that most local produce was sent to Sydney.

“(I) looked at the availability of produce around locally and found that there were some local orchards and farmers that were growing products that weren’t being made available and accessible locally,” said Reid.

Reid was inspired to create The Gathered Green after suffering from mercury toxicity.

“I found out that I had mercury toxicity through my amalgams and that sort of just sparked my interest in what else out there,” she said.

“(It) really got me to thinking about the food we eat and that affects your health and wellbeing,” she said.

Selection of produce from the Gathered Green

The selection of produce is rather impressive. This week alone customers were treated to broccoli, potatoes, banana, rockmelon, eggplant, corn, plums and basil.

Servings are generous with an abundance of plums and enough basil to make a kilo of pesto. It is great value for money.

The produce itself is incredibly fresh, upon opening the box one is met with the smell of a farmer’s market. It helps that the fruit and vegetables are stored with ice packs.

Whilst home deliveries are not available in Canberra, it has no impact on the overall quality and convenience of the box. The products are some of the best from the region and the service is exceptional.

It is well worth a trip to the Lyneham Netball Courts carpark, where The Gathered Green is located every Wednesday from 5-6pm – to pick up a pre-ordered box.

Reid makes the two-hour drive – there and back – every Wednesday to personally hand out every box and she has no complaints.

“Regional people are really used to driving and you can listen to podcasts on the radio,” she said.

“And when you have beautiful countryside to look at it’s easy.”
