ACT Policing has arrested a 31-year-old Kaleen man after he assaulted a police officer following multiple burglaries in the inner south early this morning (Monday, May 20).

After receiving multiple calls to burglaries earlier in the night at about 4.47am police were called to an alleged burglary at an apartment in Kingston.

A woman woke up to a male standing beside her bed and chased him out of the apartment. She later discovered a number of items missing and contacted police.

A man matching the description of the offender was seen by officers entering Telopea Park. An officer chased the man through the park and apprehended him.

During the struggle the offender struck the officer in the face with a log. The officer suffered minor injuries during the assault and was taken to The Canberra Hospital.

It’s obvious that the appeal court judge needs a log across the face. He or she needs to read up on justice Raymond Watson.

Magistrate Maria Doogan sentenced Wickey to 5 years imprisonment on 20 April 2011 for a string of offences but the appeals court in their inimitable wisdom considered that manifestly excessive and reduced the sentence. After much bungling by the judiciary re sentencing periods it was finally determined that he would be eligible for parole on 16 February 2013.

Unfortunately his drug addiction has got the better of him and he just couldn’t help himself. So to the judiciary i merely ask do you reckon you might get it right this time?

Perhaps the same magistrate could sentence each crim on the occasion/s of their appearance in court. That would give them some sort career path management including annual/as required performance appraisals.

At the risk of undermining the perception of me as pro-crim, can I just post two links http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/log-attackaccused-denied-bail-20130520-2jw7j.html and http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-09-10/burglar-wins-appeal-after-court-bungle/4253452 and sarcastically congratulate Justice Refshauge on a job well done?

No problem with him getting his time served recognised. The actual sentence is another matter.

Piece of Wood makes more sense, I did wonder how a log could a) be wielded b) only cause minor injuries?

It took me a minute or so; but I finally worked out the Thorin reference. Um; two calls at exactly the same time, 4:47am, or were they called out at 4:47am for both incidents?

I came for the heading, I was not disappointed.
