Word coming through that Todd Carney’s contract has been terminated.

Lock up your daughters and watch your backs, he’s got nothing to lose now.

UPDATE: In a press conference Todd has blamed us in the media (that includes all of you lot) and the club for treating him unfairly.

He’s an idiot.

What you reap, is what you sow.

He should have been sacked last year

Yes I was thinking much the same myself.

If he goes over to France he’ll be representing all Australians! Egad!

Somehow I don’t think the French will put up with his sh*t for very long!

I’d heard that the NFL was having serious problems with off-field behaviour in the 90’s, and decided to require new recruits to reach a certain grade point average before being signed up to a team – can anyone substantiate this or provide more info?

Sounds like a great idea to me. Instead of telling youngsters “you don’t have to do well at school, there’s always a career in sports”, cut that off too so a good education is the only way to go.

Unfortunately, losers like Carney are also role models (like it or not) for younger league players and fans, and they also represent Canberra. I for one, even though I don’t even follw the sport, don’t want a wanker like him representing Canberra, or setting such a crap example to the kids of this fine town.

Maybe the news should stop worrying about the prat. I’m sure there’s more important things than what twats get up to at the ABN.

I think the point is that the Raiders and the NRL have a huge financial interest in presenting their players as role models to wider society.

The thoughtful fan base that wants to expand the game would also want a piece of the viral marketing this opens up.

Todd was getting in the way of this lucrative opportunity.

There was always a trade off between what he brought the team and what he subtracted from it, and he just kept stacking things on the wrong side of the balance.

He might play Rugby League well (I wouldn’t know, i don’t watch it), but I think that the NRL has a duty to the wider community (that done give a $hit about league) to make sure he isn’t on out TV or news papers for being a twat.

Deadmandrinking12:41 pm 08 Aug 08

But he plays good footy, isn’t that what you people want to watch?

tylersmayhem12:19 pm 08 Aug 08

And he’s a f**kwit, really!

Deadmandrinking12:12 pm 08 Aug 08

What’s with the whole barking at women thing? Is Carney telling them he’s a dog?

I think it’s more a problem with people holding sport in too high regards. It shouldn’t be a moral representative of society. It’s entertainment, really.

tylersmayhem11:50 am 08 Aug 08

Whilst I don’t think I’m to blame, Todd, I will say that I think the media focuses too much on football player’s off-field behavior. They are f-king football players, for god’s sake. You know what footy-heads are like, we all went to school with them.

If I ever have a boy and I see him barking at women…look out!

The way is now paved for Sonny Bill’s exit from the Bulldogs, all he has to do is get drunk and wee on some frenchmen.

After NZ gives him his outstanding service medal, he’ll get the flick from his club over here.

Apparently the Raiders are now looking at the services of Tim Smith. Swap one alcohol problem for another.

As one of the posters on the Canberra Times site points out, have a look at the back-drop of the shot of the chastened Carney. Coincidence or the cameraman’s wry sense of humour?

You know what footy-heads are like, we all went to school with them. They talk utter sh-t, they drink like fish and they get into biff-ups. That’s what being a stupid jock is all about.

But if you want good football, you’re gonna need to get these guys to play. That’s their one purpose in life and that’s the one thing they do really well. I see the Raiders lost quite badly to the Broncos (not that I really gave a sh-t till it became funny)…

Well boo f**king hoo! If he wants to choose booze over football, then he doesn’t deserve any opportunity.

more funds now to attract some talent?

VYBerlinaV8_the_one_they_all_copy9:11 am 08 Aug 08

Good result for the Raiders. Who gives a crap whether he was a good player, he was an asshole and the Raiders have more credibility for taking this position.

mdme workalot8:46 am 08 Aug 08

I heard the chairman of the Raiders on Ross Solly’s breakfast show this morning, and he basically said that even if Carney had accepted the 5 point plan, they would have terminated him due to ‘an incident that occurred in a licenced premises the night his apology was published’. I think that was in reference to the Goulburn incident.

Good on the Raiders for reflecting the community feelings towards this waste of space, and good on the NRL for backing them up and refusing to register him. Who cares if he goes overseas? It’s one less grubby football player on our streets. While France may end up getting some very talented players with abhorrent off-field behaviour, I believe Australia is the winner here because we can say proudly that we refuse to accept that sort of behaviour, and community attitudes and safety are more important to us than anything else.

I love how folks like this blame anyone other than themselves…

Hooray for Toddy,
Hooray at last,
Hooray for Toddy
He’s a horse’s arse.

Don’t be mistaken,
Don’t be misled,
He’s not a horse’s arse,
He’s a horse’s head.

I’ve followed the Raiders since they arrived on the scene in 1982 – we’ve had some really great players, and Todd – you’re just a continuing embarrassment and I’m impressed by the club’s stance.

Take yourself, possibly ditch your current manager, and go talk to Mundine – he seems to on a mission to convert the game’s simpletons to ‘greater’ things.

Anyway, have a beer or 50 tonight, piss on anyone who doesn’t suit you, and steal a car and do a few burnouts closer to home – you’ve got no-one to worry about offending anymore, especially if you can frame someone else for the dirty deed (it would be great if Riolo could be popped into the frame for it!).

anybody looking for a driver?

He’ll have to get a real job now. Back in the early 80s, they all had proper jobs, with understanding employers who let them have time for training and trips etc. But they had to work in addition to playing.

A loss for the Raiders sport wise, but not a loss in real terms.. He’s a tosser and he only has himself to blame.

I dunno – he could get in real trouble in France if he starts ‘acting the goat’ or whatever he called his ‘boyish hi-jinks’ while drinking too much. I mean he doesn’t strike me as very perceptive, and he won’t be able to apologise in French.

Well when he lines up with Toulon he won’t have to worry about an injunction. Very clever way to escape a contract and get more $$$.

“They (the Raiders) could not retain both Todd Carney and credibility.

Well said. If they had folded on this, I think the team as a whole would have lost a lot of respect in this town.

My feeling is that the Raiders made the only feasible decision, and good on them for doing it. They could not retain both Todd Carney and credibility.

I would hope that this might be the wake-up call that does the job (all the earlier ones having gone unheard) and allows this man to focus on being the talented footballer he is, by deciding that he will never be well served by alcohol. As it is, he has been the butt of jokes and rumours that have nothing to do with what he does best.

Man, ditch digging companies around the region must be in a frenzy to sign him up and get him working for them. I mean, what else is the muppet going to do …

“I’ll be bach.”

As the School of Music student said on dress-up day.

“I’ll be bach.”

Todd or his manager don’t come out looking too flash either – I wonder if he wishes he’d accepted teh conditions now. Or was he hoping to get teh sack so he could go Overseas.

they need minders some of these people.

Todd Carney – Terminated

Most Misleading Heading of the day. Got my hopes up and everything. Oh well, whether it was him or his contract that was terminated, good riddance.

No matter, the game goes on and I’ll be there on Sunday. Herbert will benefit and give the club far more years and at half the price of Carney. The Club admin don’t come out this looking too clever – lessons for them as well as the players.

Perhaps it is all a rous to allow him to stand in the next election. Stanhopeless did offer him the job of an ambassador for youth after the first incident last year!

He can now join the Bulldogs – he’ll fit in well with those meatheads!

Oh well, I guess I don’t have to refer to Justin Carney as ‘new Carney’ anymore. He can just be ‘Carney’.

He has a criminal record, so might not be able to get a visa.

The NRL will also be asking the SL to also honour their de-registration of Carney.

I guess Todd wasn’t prepared to accept the point in the five point plan that meant he couldn’t play for the remainder of the season.

Guess now we’ll build Marc Herbert into a solid player so we can sack him or let him go to a higher bidder in a few years time.

Another top Rugby player overseas. Great.

Devil, all you need is a simple snippet of HTML – something like this:
<a href=”http://www.website.com/page.htm”>link text</a>
will result in:
link text

just remember to always include the “http://” part in the href, otherwise the link won’t work properly.

What a waste.

So, which English Super League club will snap him up first?

He could join bar dwellers, Mark Riddell and Tim Smith at Wigan.. What a trio.

I guess now there is nothing for him to do except go loose some points on his licence playing for a french team.

I’m very concerned about that myself.

But I have a lot of faith in the next generation.

Well good. It’s ridiculous how many chances these knuckleheads get just because they happen to be good at a sport. They clearly don’t see the need to be more than a subpar human being.
