Twitter: Follow @TrafficCanberra

Jclarke 30 November 2010 18

Hello fellow Canberran drivers,

Do you want to follow what’s up with traffic related updates across the capital? Then follow @TrafficCanberra on twitter!

Myself and JohnnyCharisma (member of riotACT) manage this twitter account to retweet traffic related tweets across the capital community to keep you safe and aware. We retweet traffic related tweets from the police too.

TrafficCanberra has been around since the start of the year, and it is attracting almost 200 followers, so follow us and we’ll keep you updated with daily traffic updates!

@actpolicing is equally effective – I’d keenly suggest you follow both.

Therefore, I put it to the reader that traffic reports on twitter would be about as useful as a surf report for Alice Springs…

This morning before I left home TrafficCanberra tweeted to me to avoid my usual route along the Monaro Highway. Shortly after a taxi driver I follow tweeted that the traffic was backed up to Rose Cottage and travelling at 25km/h. Thats before I left home… The traffic reports on Twitter are sometimes very useful.

I have enough trouble facing the mirror in the morning let alone a computer first thing…

Twittering or tweeting or whatever you call it using your mobile phone while driving is a definite no no but somebody who got got caught in a traffic incident or passed one could always wait until they got to work/home/school/wherever and tweet about then using their computer.

“Are you kidding – traffic reports for Canberra? As someone who moved here from Sydney last year I can only imagine the content would be “there is a car coming in the opposite direction (with lights on)”

Hmm – candidate for the rotating RA front page tagline?

In a previous thread I posted:

“Off topic but I just don’t get twitter.

Our TVs get bigger and bigger.
The hard drives in computers have more and more capacity every week.
Data download speeds are lightyears faster than they used to be.

Now twitter invites people to communicate at 140 characters at a time.

WTF?”

In any case, using a mobile for twitter while driving is surely as illegal as talking without a hands free kit etc.

Therefore, I put it to the reader that traffic reports on twitter would be about as useful as a surf report for Alice Springs…

I love the internet, email and text.

I absolutely do not understand twitter.

I didn’t used to either. Then I had a need to use it to promote a side project and now I am hooked. I have three accounts (can’t have my worlds colliding) and I view them all at the same time via TweetDeck.

It’s a great way to catch breaking news, assuming you’re following the right people, and a great way to get your message out (if you have one that needs getting out).

Following #TheAshes the last few days has been entertaining as well.

Canberra doesn’t have traffic jams…just slow traffic…at times.

I would suggest @ACTPOL_Traffic, official, guaranteed to be correct and very handy in detailing the severity of an accident, associated traffic diversions etc.

Did you just skim, or assume about this thread? Like I said in the original post
“We retweet traffic related tweets from the police too.” < — this incidates that we have a good relationshiop with the ACTPOL_Traffc tweets. Next time, read slowly.

#trafficCanberra – massive accident on the GDE caused by driver busy tweeting about traffic delays. #nostradamus

I use to follow this, but the account appeared to be abandoned.

Nowadays you’re better off using Trapster or Waze to get traffic info in Canberra.

Mate, that’s the other account, trafficCanberra is brand new – the old one is CanberraTraffic which is still abandoned. TrafficCanberra is still sane and tweeting the latest traffic updates…

I’ll check it out. #donttweetanddrive

Make sure to watch twitter for “@Waze” tweets. I’m not up to speed with twitter, but Waze will automatically tweet along the lines of “Just reported a traffic jam on Northbourne Ave, ACT using @waze Social GPS”.
