Un-named Canberra Westpac employee humanises Gail Kelly

johnboy 23 November 2010 14

It is a testament to the overwhelming power of Australia’s big four banks that Westpac CEO Gail Kelly was recently listed as one of the ten most powerful women in the world.

Fortunately for her when The Australian came calling for a puff piece she had a good news story involving her Canberra minions:

Today the CEO has just received an email from a young staffer in Canberra who says he was worried about an elderly customer he hadn?t seen for a while. So he went to the customer’s home and discovered that she had been in hospital. Then he saw her, looking somewhat confused, in a taxi outside.

“He helped her to get into her place and put her things away,” an excited Kelly recounts in her Sydney office. “He cleaned out her fridge, made her a cup of tea and sat with her till he found a friend to look after her. It was unbelievable. That’s what we’re about – knowing our customers and caring about them. You tell these stories because they’re hero stories about what our people do. This man is only 21 years old.”

Aww heartwarming. Shame about those of us who rely on internet banking and would just like lower fees though.

Westpac is a good bank. Westpac is a good bank. Westpac is a good bank. You like Westpac. You like Westpac. You can trust Westpac. Westpac is your friend. Why don’t you take out a mortgage with Westpac?

Buy Westpac shares. Buy Westpac shares. Buy Westpac shares. Westpac… Westpac… Westpac… Go on, you know you want to.

Yes, I own Westpac shares. Why do you ask?

Both Lady Gaga and Westpak are responsible for causing a hell of a lot of unnecessary suffering.

I assume the leaving out of politicians from that list was an oversight of your part?

I can’t help but think comparing politicians to corporate bosses to “musicians” is a little like comparing apples to oranges to light globes.

Sure they are all undoubtedly powerful and hold influence in the world, but how the hell do you rate them against each other?

next week she’s nomintating for a safe Liberal party seat for the next federal election as she will feel that it’s her chance to “give something back to society” (having taken lessons from Malcolm)

I can’t wait to watch which party sinks lowest in a “ACA v Today Tonight” or “Today v Sunrise” War for Votes.

Having met Ms Kelly I’m damn sure our hero wasn’t thinking of the bank when he apparently did his good deed. If he had been he’d have figured he’d apply the same courtesy to his customer as the bank apply to their staff and simply say “F*** you” I’ll guarantee the guy was chasing a commission or sales target of some kind if he was speaking to a customer after hours in the first place.

So how did the email come about, is it a case of Gen Y asking the boss for a pat on the back “see, look what I did” or was the employee responding to a stalking allegation?

Shouldn’t the email have come from the branch manager, not the employee themselves??

I call bullshit feelgood story.

Johnboy, your link is out-of-date, says she is No.18

But before I got all pedant-ranty – I saw that it was dated Auguest 2009. So in 18months she’s gone from 18 to 8. http://www.forbes.com/wealth/power-women/list

Weirdly enough, she’s still beaten by Lady Gaga!

And our our Jules is No.58!! Fading newsanchor Dianne Sawyer (@ spot 46) is considered more powerful than Julia.

And in response to the OP: nope, just like the CBA Xmas party news story, people should realise that the staff working in the banks; the 21yrs, the lady behind the counter, etc, are just ordinary people who have no control over the policies, fees and interest-rate increases that CEOs and execs implement – ordinary people who do nice things occasionally

So Gail, you are not part of “hero stories about what our people do”

So the Westpac employees are normal caring human being but how does that justify her?

Yep. Someone who was a quality human went out of their way to care for someone4 who needed help. Nothing to do with the bank at all…

That’s assuming Mr Caring from Canberra doesn’t earn some sort of commission and was concerned for his own welfare first, haha.

… and then the bank charged her a hefty fee for the trouble she’d caused, fired another round of employees, raised interest rates beyond the level of the RBA, and justified these measures by claiming they were necessary for the bank to survive, before announcing yet another year of record profits.

Maybe the bank could demonstrate their committment by paying this person for the time spent…
