Unconsidered issues with the new prison?

A comment from Miz that I felt deserved a wider audience on the subject of the new prison:

One thing the ACT corrective services clearly haven’t thought of, is how many prisoners, either Territory or federal, who did their crime in the ACT but are currently in a NSW prison, actually want to come to the ACT prison. While it’s VERY nice, I would imagine quite a few might want to stay in the NSW system, if they are not actually from the ACT and have family ties in NSW. In other words, those who come over the border to commit the crime.

Conversely, I expect there are offenders all over Australia who have family ties in ACT who may want to/be able to transfer here. This means that they will probably have to deal with quite a few interstate transfers.

I know they have not thought of this aspect because I work in an area that deals with prisoners, and we can’t get any answers! And I have not even included all the random queries from all over about whether they can transfer to the Sonic Hilton ‘ ‘cos it sounds good’ . . . (No, they can’t, but they WILL ask!).. I do wish they would stop advertising it like a hotel.

So all in all, their prisoner numbers are quite rubbery and likely to be wrong. Apparently they have just posted a pamphlet to all the ACT prisoners, with no letter, no contact phone, no request for an indication of whether they want to be transferred back to the ACT . . .
