The Canberra Times has the intriguing news that the owners of the Uni Pub (and the Civic Pub and Kingston Hotel) are planning to duplicate the facility on London Circuit.

The new hotel, which is yet to be named, will comprise three storeys and a basement housing cloakrooms and toilets. Mr Dawn said he expected it to be up and running in 12-18 months.

His company has also lodged plans with the ACT Planning and Land Authority to develop the side of the building, which runs into and off Darwin Place behind Uni Pub, into a 270sqm garden bar.

The area would include a new veranda and a retractable wall to enclose a heated ”tropical” garden. While Mr Dawn is preparing to start retrofitting the building for the hotel within days, the plans for the garden bar are yet to be approved.

With New Acton going up in smoke all those new apartment dwellers will need somewhere to go we suppose.

There are a few beer gardens here and there in Canberra but nothing substantial in the city. I think it’s a great idea. If it’s heated well it could work in winter as well as summer.

By ‘garden bar’, read: outdoor smoking place. There’s plenty of those around, normally in pokie venues though.

When I eat at the UniPub I get what

Why would they build a pub (ok a hotel as well) practically next to their existing pub? I always wonder how they make any money at Uni Pub. Every time I go there I only see a dozen or so people in the downstairs bar and the pool room and upstairs bistro are usually closed.

You should go on a Friday/Saturday night. They normally have a few punters then.

Why would they build another one? So more people come to it. At the moment it is one pub by itself, when there are two big pumping pubs they will make twice the money because people will be tempted to go there instead of Shooters, Krave and The Clubhouse.

Oh god please no. One of the best things Uni Pub has going for it is the lack of idiots that start up fights at these places.

There is the occasional bit of slappy slappy push going on but nothing compared to moosheads.

The sea of hi-vis vests spilling out the doors each afternoon at blue collar beer o’clock says to me that they’re doing alright – notwithstanding the Friday/Saturday night meat market.

Hopefully the new establishment improves their attitude towards food, because the offerings of the current kitchen were abysmal the few times I attempted to dine there.

I think it will end up being more like Meiosis.

Dividning the current punters between two different but very similar places!

It’ll certainly need decent heating. The place it’s planned to go is behind the pub, in an area that’s surrounded by buildings – so it gets very little sun on the best of days. It’s also a place where, on a blustery autumn day, it’s possible to end up in the middle of a whirlwind of leaves – the entire area acts as a wind tunnel at times.

On the other hand, in summer, it’ll be nice to have somewhere that’s in shade more often than not.

There’s exactly one three story building next to the existing bar on London Circuit and it’s in the picture.

You beauty! A beer garden in Canberra! Seriously, this is awesome!

Yeah! It’ll be awesome to sit outside on those balmy winter nights…

I looked and couldn’t find any mention of exactly where they are actually planning to build the new place. London Circuit is a long street.
