What are they like to work for?

Job was for Customer Service person. But the job mysteriously disappeared before deadline off the site.

Great customer service kicks in only when you finally get through … I have waited long times for understaffed Canberra Connect to answer the phone, and am sometimes too frustrated to fully appreciate the very nice people who eventually answer.

Just so you’re clear, the APS jobs website is for Australian Public Service jobs (ie Federal). Canberra Connect and ACTION are ACT public service (rough equivalent to state government public service) which you’ve probably already found on http://www.jobs.act.gov.au/ .

Armed with a good technical degree and nearly 25 years of continuaously excellent performance in private enterprise I applied for an APS position that was squarely in my area of expertise. My wife and others who are in the APS advised me about addressing the selection criteria etc etc in my application, so it all looked pretty good to me, but I didn’t even get an interview.

Overall, I would say that if you’re trying to get into the Circus (federal or ACT), set your expectations low and be prepared for bullshit.

Start as a contractor, this not only builds your skills, but opens up the doors. We see a lot of contractors end up applying for full time ops. But be careful, too many years contracting can be a deterrent.

Thanks Guys, you’ve really compelled me to get the application done as soon as I can. I haven’t got it here on this computer, but it’s on my one at home, but it’s a call / store front role, if that makes sense. I used to be a staff co-ordinator in a support dept for a small IT place in Sydney, where I was the main point of contact for all faults. I had to recognize the problem and point the client to the appropriate fix, either online or to our staff. I also did all the invoicing for support as well.

Canberra Connect is one of those rare places where they are truly dedicated to customer service. I highly recommend it for the work environment.

Of course there is also the actual work to consider. No matter how inspiring the environment may be, if you find the work boring, you won’t last either. There are lots of opportunities for moving up or sideways in the public service though.

If you want to start out in the PS, recruitment agencies are a great way to get your foot in the door. The selection process is easy and short and you – as well as your employer – get to try before you buy.

I’ve been with Canberra Connect for 7 years and have nothing but good things to say about my experience here. I’ve been provided with some excellent leadership, plenty of training and development opportunities and have made some great friends. I have no intention of leaving for the foreseeable future!
