How many road deaths?

Has anyone else noticed the blunder made by His Maj. the honorable Stan Hopeless?

Last week he was interviewed on ABC television and stated categorically that the reason for requiring tighter speeding laws was that apparently there were more than “200 deaths on ACT roads, and that these people would still be alive today…” etc etc.

But last weekend the ABC reported that in each of the states, and in particular the ACT, the number of deaths on the roads was at a record low of less than 20 (I think he said 19 deaths.)

Can anyone explain the discrepancy in these numbers? Who is correct? Who is “more correct”? Who is fudging the stats? And WHY?

It wouldn’t be for fund-raising would it?

[ED – Anyone want to suggest better ways to raise the funds?]

Sorry Caf. I didn’t mean to put words in your mouth.

I agree that if you get caught speeding you’ve got no one to blame but yourself. All I wanted to point out was that there are plenty of other reasons people die on the road besides speeding.

Also, I think anyone who checks out the driving habits in India on you tube, or in real life, then Canberra drivers will all look like saints.

ban cars. and people. and otters.

Go drive in the UK then re-think that statement!

I still have only one speeding fine from 14 years driving. If I can have that with my poor driving skills and lead foot, none of the rest of you have anything to complain about.

That said, I think that the Cameras on perfectly straight bits of good road would be better reallocated to school zones, inner city Northbourne Ave, or as red light cameras.

In 19 years I have been booked once. I was young, stupid and driving when extremely fatigued.

I also have a lead foot, but I drive to the conditions of the road, weather and traffic.

I used to be quite pleased when I moved here that the speed and redlight cameras were done in a sensible manner where accidents happened and to prevent dangerous behaviour like running red lights at high speed. I liked living somewhere where commonsense was applied in this respect.

It annoys me greatly that this has changed and Big Brother is creeping in further and further.

A concerted mental health / depression push would also be likely to improve things.

Remove all large trees from within 50m of all road bends in the ACT: this will stop all the meatheads who do 100km/h over the speed limit at 2am from killing themselves when they lose control and plough off the road.

In a few months time, expect to see one of these two statements in a media release/ news grab near you…

Scenario 1- ” The Government is pleased that the increased commitment to monitoring excessive speed through road safety cameras has reduced the number of fatal accidents in the ACT. As a result, further cameras will be introduced to more areas to promote safe driving at all times”.

Scenario 2 – “The Government is disappointed that the number of fatal accidents in the ACT has increased/remains too high despite an increased commitment to monitoring excessive speed through road safety cameras. As a result, further cameras will be introduced to more areas to promote safe driving at all times”.

Sigh…

As for deaths, I would be interested in a statistic on how many ACT residents die in motor vehicle accidents each year. When you consider the Kms done outside of the ACT by Canberristanis each year, it might be interesting.

But the way that Caf put it was that doing the speed limit would fix it.

I believe the ACT Govt is aiming for single digit number of road deaths for 2009 and beyond.

in 2004 there were 9 deaths, before jumping to 26 in 2005.

The problem with the ACT is we have such a relativly small population that figures really mean nothing. I mean to say lets say we (heaven forbid) have a bas accident like Kempsie a few years back, all of a sudden out toll would jump from 9, 14, or what ever to maybe over 40 in a single year.

More realisticly though our toll does go up and down and it isn’t due to any better or worse driving or road conditions, just the luck of the draw at the time of the accident.

I would be ok with speed cameras in city limits if the Govt took no money from them. Only license points that way there can be no argument that they are being used for revenue raising. I would like to see the ACT govt take the lead here and once and for all get rid of the bullshit that is constantly being spun here. Its so blatantly obvious that most of these cameras are for revenue raising just by there location. And the govt is collectively lowering the IQ of every one in ACT who believes thier propaganda about safety.

Why don’t we just get someone to actually keep track of these things. Someone with more than 50 IQ points…

There are many causes of road accidents, as we all know. Most have been listed in the various threads on the subject on this site. One I am sure is unrecognised is the increasing thickness of ‘A’ pillars (the metal holding the windscreen in) to increase occupant safety in case of rollover. Unfortunately, this body of metal can ‘hide’ another vehicle approaching, particularly from the left at a low angle.

As a ‘bush’ road safety enthusiast, I am fairly sure this was the cause of two accidents recently at an intersection on Long Gully Road.

Do the Police accident investigation team study these accidents, and come to conclusions regarding probable causes? Are their findings published to add to the general knowledge?

Does a disconnect exist between those tasked with studying the results and probable causes of accidents, and our strident politicians claiming the majority of accidents are speed related?

Then they’ll have to do a lot more than simply put a few more speed cameras in.

Woody – as Gomer pointed out in an earlier post the road deaths in NT went up after they introduced 130km/h speed limit instead of unlimited. People are bored to sleep while driving on long straight roads for hours at a time at ridiculously low speed limits.

I won’t drop to your level with your 6 year old potty mouth on your 2nd point.

But, yes it will help at zero cost. But the way that Caf put it was that doing the speed limit would fix it.

The govt is lazy. Putting speed cameras in pointless spots. Wouldn’t they be put to better use where speeding has caused deaths? Don’t worry about unregistered cars, unlicensed drivers, drunk drivers, dangerous drivers. Which speed law is going to catch these?

Woody Mann-Caruso9:11 pm 02 Feb 09

Because this will solve all the road deaths won’t it?

roadworks when people are working are one time I am definitely under the speed limit. Although it does bug me when they forget to cover the signs when they are finished for the day (where that is applicable)

I’ve seen some interesting interpretations of the posted roadworks speed limits on Morshead Drive heading towards the airport). It’s been posted as a 40kmph zone from Plant Rd in Duntroon since forever, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone slow down until they hit actual roadworks (usually at or just past the roundabout at Monaro Hwy).

Driving on the Hume to Melbourne on the otherhand…
Over the Australia Day long weekend there was no work whatsoever going on in any of the multitude of roadworks areas, but all of the roadwork speed limits still applied and were signposted as being “enforced”.

If they’re serious about catching speeding drivers and/or raising a bit of easy dough, they just need to park a copper with radar gun on any roadworks anywhere in the ACT and they’d make a mint in one peak-hour.

Having driven on the Hume only a couple of weeks ago, even when they are doing work, most of the speed limits are still in place when the roadworks were nowhere near the traffic. There was even one lane closed and controlled by lollipop people when there wasn’t any work going on in the 2nd lane at all!

If they started properly enforcing speed limits properly they should be required to put in place reasonable speed limits i.e. 40km/hr only when workmen are right next to traffic or there are significant obstacles on the road and should return to normal when there is no work being conducted or there is no work going on near the roadways.

The NT road toll went up by 50% for 2008 which is pretty extreme. You might ask why, but no-one seems willing to blame the open road speed limits they introduced in 2008. I wonder why.

[ED – Anyone want to suggest better ways to raise the funds?]

Yep, sure do. F**ck off local government.

they do signpost ACT roadworks as being enforced. It would also be handy if they didn’t have those speed signs so far from the actual place the road works are taking place – especially when they aren’t doing any on that day or night.

I’m floored that there are no cyclist deaths listed!

Looks like being old and a pedestrian puts you in a seriously high risk category!

I agree with you Caf. I find it particularly helpful in roadworks zone, it gives me perverse pleasure to see a line of cars behind me. Those reduced speed limits are there to protect us, and the road workers, yet we still see morons speeding through roadworks. I’m often surprised the road toll isn’t higher.

If you go to http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/publications/2009/RDA_1208.aspx you will find the document with all road deaths in Australia last year and their breakdown.

The ACT had 14, same as last year.
3 were drivers, 4 were passengers, 3 were pedestrians, 4 were motorcyclists.

If you go to the Fatal Road Crash Database http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/road_fatality_statistics/fatal_road_crash_database.aspx you can find that by age 1 was 15, 1 – 18, 1- 20, 1 – 27, 1 – 33, 1 – 34, 1 – 44, 1 – 52, 1 – 61, 1 – 74, 1 – 83, 1 – 87, 1 – 89 and 1 – 90. For some reason it doesn’t have what the posted speed limit was for the ACT data. Out of the deaths the 44, 83 and 87 yr olds were pedestrians. 6 of the others were single vehicle. 5 of them occurred between midnight and 8 am, 4 between 5 pm and midnight. 1 on a Sunday, 3 on a Monday, 1 on a Tuesday, 2 on a Wednesday, 3 on a Thursday, 2 on a Friday and 2 on a Saturday .

(yes I am a little bored)

A bit like the time when Derryn Hinch announced that a new film studio in Melbourne would create “45 million jobs”. He later had to announce that it would create 45 jobs, not 45 million.

Yes, well – 200 sounds a lot more impressive than 20.

He more than likely meant 200 eaths since self government. I am sure if there were 200 road deaths in the ACT in one year it would be headlinne news.
