toasted sandwich

Everyone loves a good toasted sandwich. My favourite moment of the toasted sandwich experience is that first bite when all the melted cheese starts to ooze out and you have to catch it with your tongue. You all know what I’m talking about – it’s the moment when you know you’re onto a good toastie.

The good ol’ toasted sandwich has seen a revamp of late, with some of the trendy cafes around town serving up some unusual combinations with gourmet ingredients. I like gourmet, but sometimes I just feel like the stock standard cheese toastie from my local takeaway.

This week I’m looking for Canberra’s best toasted sandwich. You might be into the more traditional ham, cheese, tomato-type combo or maybe you prefer something a little more gourmet – either way, I want to hear from you. Who makes Canberra’s best toasted sandwich?

I don’t know why you’d pay someone to make you a toasted cheese sandwich, unless they were using some $40 a slice cheese. Anyway, I make the best toasted cheese sandwich, the secret is to place sliced parmesan cheese on the outside of the bread. I use a contact grill and allow it to contact the parmesan on the outside, holy snapping turtles Batman It’s awesome!

I stumbled across the recipe when I ran out of salty butter one night whilst making one and substituted the butter for parmesan, I’ve never looked back.

I was thinking the same, I can’t recall a time where I bought a toasted sandwich, they’re for when I’m too lazy to do anything decent at home.

Gaby’s Food Van in Barton. Toasted ham, cheese, tomato and beetroot. Lots of pepper.

Tupelo or cupping room are my go to’s.

Wife didnt like it though 😛

Love Gus’ toasted sandwiches. It’s the dish that makes me go back to eat there

Should we expand this to the best fruit toast?

I’ve had decent toasted sandwiches at Gus’ in Civic before. Just your normal stuff, nothing fancy.

Is it possible to make your own?

Where do you get the recipes and are there any courses you can take?

I can’t always afford to do fine dining out in the City.

The Cuppong Room. Crazy fillings as per comment 1, but that just seem to work. The best one by far has been the Cuban Reuben. I think the guy who runs Tupelo used to be at The Cupping Room so makes sense that they are similar.

The best jaffle I’ve eaten in a very, very long time is the beef brisket, cheese, sauerkraut and mustard relish toastie from Tupelo in the city. It also comes with a pickle. Perfect lunch.
