Frame Works is a unique series of new dance works by young artists “exploring portraiture, identity and framing across the Visual Arts and Dance worlds.
“Under the combined title of Frame Works, these pieces will be presented in a range of evocative sites within the Gallery. Some of the works will last only a few minutes and will be performed in direct response to the presence of viewers, while others will run in a “durational loop” for 60 minutes at a time.Over a four-week intensive period, the Soft Landing 2 mentoring program (at the QL2 Centre for Youth Dance) has been providing seven tertiary dance graduates with the opportunity to enrich and expand their experiences in choreography, specifically focussing on the “choreographer in solo practice”. Working in collaboration with staff from the National Portrait Gallery, each of these young dance artists is creating a stand-alone solo performance work.
Associate Director at QL2, project leader Brian Lucas, says “The artists are focussing on the dual territories of biographical and autobiographical creation and performance, using external portraiture as a starting point”.
