Automotive mayhem in Kaleen?

Posh 5 May 2009 48

Did anyone hear or see the idiot speeding at what would have been easily 120kms in Maribyrnong Street, Kaleen at around 11.15pm last night?

Apparently this wasn’t the first occasion through the night.

I thought it was a motor bike from the sound of it, but was shocked to see what looked like an early 70’s Datsun(?) speeding from before Ellenborough round about up towards Giralang then 5 minutes later come back in the opposite direction at an unbelievable speed.

If you were crossing the road or trying to turn into a street you wouldn’t have had a hope of surviving that crash.

A Tarago (202 kw) is not in the same performance league as Brock’s 1989 Ford Sierra
(432 kw). You’re out by just a little bit there……neither is the average 80’s v8 race car, which is what was being compared.

I am certainly not being hypocritical when I call these people morons. Anyone who tailgates or drives in a residential area way over the speed limit is an idiot.

couldn’t agree more with this part of your post…but your earlier post about outlawing performance mods is ridiculous….this clown that is screaming around kaleen is a fool and i wouldnt mind betting that he has had nothing to do with building the car in question but rather has purchased it from whoever did build it and is now abusing it like the tool he obviously is……..i sincerely hope he gets caught before he injures or kills an innocent party

Maybe they should have put the speed cameras there, instead on on perfectly straight bits of the parkway…

And this pretty much sums up my gripes with speed cameras. We know that there are many intra-suburban streets limited to 60km/h because they have houses on them where people zoom along at well above that. We seem to have accidents such as the one in tuggers recently where those kids died because they were jerking around on this kind of road.

I think putting speed in these types of locations to enforce speed limits in suburban areas would be far more valuable than sticking them on higher speed roads simply because it’s easier to catch people.

I haven’t. Seriously. I’m not being hypocritical either, maybe I’m boring but I’ve just never done this or even felt compelled to. I’ve taken a few old cars into the pine Forrests and other dirt roads around the ACT when I was younger though. Even at 17 I knew there was less chance of hurting an innocent third party there.

Some of these morons are running around in machines more powerful than those punted around Bathurst by Brock, Moffat, etc

Some? Virtually all of them are. A current-model Tarago is faster than an 80s V8 race car. The problem is the “moron” bit, not the “powerful” bit. I don’t want to defend stupid drivers, but some comments seem hypocritical: Who here has never floored the accelerator on their car late at night on a quiet street?

Also, unmuffled blow-off valves are illegal.

Maybe I need to drive with welding goggles – maybe the bi-xenons are blinding the lumens as well as me.

They blind me as well – I see the shadow of my car in the light from their headlights.

Don’t know what the answer is – speed bumps can be a pain – but since there are two schools in this part of Maribyrnong then maybe that would stop them speeding along (both day and night)on what is probably the straightest section of Maribyrnong.

Maybe they should have put the speed cameras there, instead on on perfectly straight bits of the parkway…

Don’t think I haven’t considered this option for mine…

Perhaps it’s time the authorities put a ban on engine modifications which increase power. Some of these morons are running around in machines more powerful than those punted around Bathurst by Brock, Moffat, etc but with 10% of the driving ability of those guys.

And preventing someone modifying a car with standard 100bhp to 150bhp makes no difference when you can go out and buy a FPV/HSV with 400bhp standard?

You can slug a single ball bearing turbo on an Ls1 for around 10K. Including all turbo, exhaust, fuel system and computer work.

That’ll get you near 400rwkw/650rwnm, and surprisingly, near standard fuel economy if you don’t belt it.

That’s a tad more power than a v8 supercar, but you have much more weight to lug around. Be careful kiddies.

Posh, I think that your talking about bi-xenon lights which are increasingly common on newer European cars. The light they emit is much whiter than the more common halogen lights. The bi-xenons would still need to conform to the same ‘brightness’ levels(measured in lumens I believe) as regular cars.

No VYBerlinaV8_the_on – these are more like those energy saving globes we have in the house. More of a ‘white flourescent’ type rather than the old ‘dull’ type.

It’s been a while since you paid much attention to Australian motor sport then?

That’s often because they’re poorly adjusted, or because you are seeing them coming over the top of a hill.

Posh Posh 9:08 am 06 May 09

Speaking of modifications… is anyone else annoyed by the new headlights that they are putting on cars? Even on low beam they are blinding.

Ceej1973 Ceej1973 2:00 am 06 May 09

Agreed farnarkler. While they are at it, the authorities should ban speedos, indicators and mufflers, cause it seems most people have either modified them or dont use them at all in Canberra. And they should make it mandatory to remove headlights so that only fog lights can be used, to legally satisify Canberran’s obsession with fog light use in clear conditions. Oh,and they may as well request the removal of front bumper bars on vehicles so drivers can tailgate legally, just that few inches closer.

It’s a little off-topic, but can anyone help me with my physics homework?

Q1) If a car is doing 120km, and hits a 35-degree one metre high ramp, how badly will the occupants soil themselves?

kos kos 6:42 pm 05 May 09

Whats a pop off valve? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowoff_valve

If you run a turbo that spools early its a fact of life………

I also believe, like some people in this thread, that people who annoy me should suffer. If a truck drives near my street and uses its loudy loud loud brakes, the drivers head should explode.
