The team here at the RiotACT Mobile Office Reviews mobile headquarters has been listening to your feedback dear readers.
Some of you want us to go south-side.
Some of you hate how ‘hipster’ the places we’ve been visiting are.
Some of you suggested we suggested we head to the Ainslie shops and hit up Edgar’s Inn.
Well, two out of three ain’t bad.
Food:
Johnboy has posted up a lunch review, check it out.
We had planned to have breakfast there, however it turns out they only do breakfast on weekends. So Theo’s got my money this morning. It has to be said the staff at Edgar’s didn’t get upset when I brought my Theo’s burger over and ate it in their venue, which is nice of them.
It has long been a source of irritation to me how strict Edgar’s are with their food timetable, and many a time I’ve been turned away empty handed when I’ve gone there for a meal at what I thought was a reasonable hour for lunch or breakfast. I will admit that what I think is a reasonable time for breakfast is quite different to what most people think.
Productivity:
A mixed bag. The place is set up well for work, and there’s plenty of space on the tables to fit your laptop and bag and whatever else you need. Sadly the noise levels proved to be too much of a distraction. The closer we got to lunchtime the more the venue filled with the screams and cries of small children.
Ainslie shops has a lot of traffic, both of the vehicle and foot varieties, which adds to the noise and distraction levels. There also was some rather loud road works happening right next to Edgar’s, but that would not be an ongoing problem.
Coffee:
Over to Johnboy:
The coffee was pretty good for a pub and utterly forgettable, the tea was a bland tea bag is a small pot without a lid.
Comfort:
There are no couches to relax on, but the chairs and stools do the job well enough.
Outside in the beer garden the umbrellas keep out the sun, the heaters keep you warm and the potted plants keep you happy. It’s really quite nice there.
Internet Access:
No WiFi, however the mobile coverage is good. Our hotspot lost reception once, but we think it was more likely to be the fault of our hotspot than the coverage being weak.
Service:
Great. The service at Edgar’s has always been one of their best features. It can take a while during peak times to get your coffee or meal, but never long enough to cause concern.
Other People:
Lots of them. Everywhere. Families galore. A much less… eccentric… crowd than our last two venues (The Front and the ANU Co-op)
Everyone was dressed very sensibly, and very neat hair, and probably had a nice car and a mortgage. These are the kind of people who, like many of you, think using milk crates to make furniture is something only a ‘hipster’ would do. So if that’s you, then these are your people.
There were also a lot of dogs and small children there. The dogs were very well behaved, the small children not so much.
Conclusion:
I really like Edgar’s. Good beers, great food, and lovely staff make this a fantastic place to meet friends, or just hang out. As an office however it struggles. The lack of WiFi, the loud area, and the family friendly nature of the place make it ill suited for work.
Still, a lovely place to spend the day.
