There were a lot of things I missed about Canberra in my year at the coast.
The Front, turkish pizza, zierholz beer, Ethiopian curries, original music and decent kebabs to name just a few.
But the Backyard Backanalias were the thing I missed the most. Four hours of raucous music in good company with cheap beer (BYO beer in the new era) followed by campfire singalongs deep into the night.
Having missed a year’s worth I was then foiled in this season by a series of mishaps involving weather, Margaret, and picking my brother up from the airport.
On Saturday night, finally, I got my backanalia fix back, and it was worth the wait.
As usual it was an eclectic crowd of all ages crammed into an Ainslie backyard. As the night went on the very old and very young headed home leaving the average age somewhere in the mid 30s.
Saturday hadn’t been warm and the night got cold but three firebins and the option to dance seemed to keep everyone warm.
It was also one of the last public performances by the much loved Cashews. Alison and Dan are heading to the bright lights of South East Queensland. If you’re after a last Cashews fix you can check them out at the Fringe Festival as well as a farewell finale at the Corinbank Festival.
The video below gives a taste of the music on offer last night during the official program. Looking back there was a bit of a country feel which isn’t totally indicative of the sort of music you can expect.
There will be more Backanalias (they’re generally held each month through the warmer part of the year). If you’d like to experience them you’ll need to join the Canberra Musicians Club
