It would be wiser to implement that integrated PT system now and then let Canberra grow around it. Put planning tools back in the governments hands, not the developers.

Continuing with buses as the primary mode of PT will result in another Gungahlin-like transport fiasco in Molonglo.

Id direct critics to the PriceWaterhouse Coopers light rail business case.

PM, The size of Canberra in population and/or in urban spread?

Most cities in Europe that have light rail are compact high density cities with a look like Braddon/Kingston. Only a fool wants to see Canberra turn out to be like that.

Besides Adelaide 3 times the size of Canberra cannot afford more light rail, and would need some corporation to bail them out, which in this economic times is highly unlikely. What hope Canberra?

If there is no Federal Government teat to suckle on for light rail in the upcoming budget, the dreamers will have to continue to dream. Wait and see I guess.

And once you’ve done all your urban infill and increased the city to 800,000 (yikes), there will be nowhere to put your light rail.

Now is the time. Sadly this is not the govt to do it – even with the greens along for the ride.

Geez… again with the whole “Canberra is too small” view. What’s that view based on? There are plenty of overseas cities of Canberra’s size where light rail is viable.

The Canberra light rail will be opening just after the Very Fast Train and the Multi Function Polis.

The PWC Business Case is a little deficient in some areas, largely as it draws from the 2004 KBR report. This is why it fails to include Molonglo or the airport.

Any light rail route to the airport/brindabella business park should logically extend into Queanbeyan.

Oh come on bigred, they’re not hurting anyone. They probably sit and watch the Simpsons monorail episode………..up until the part where it goes out of control. Then they’d hit the stop button on the DVD player.

Of course lightrail won’t happen here but, like religious fanatics, the believers can’t be turned.
