The Best of Canberra series has been good to me so far. I’ve sampled great curry, fabulous steak, superior burgers and surprising laksa. This week I’m showing one of my own cooking weaknesses… baking! Given that my mum’s birthday is coming up, I want to know about Canberra’s Best Cakes.

If you were tasked to ‘bring a cake’ and didn’t really fancy cooking it yourself, where would you go?

I will be judging both on looks and taste for this one.

FLUTE are the guys one must go for hands down !
Cakes are amazing and delicious and superb and much more 😛

If you extend the category of cakes to include tarts/pies you just cannot beat SILO in Kingston. They are AMAZING!

As a middle aged male, even I have the ability to make a good cheesecake. Both baked and refrigerated varieties! White choc and raspberry goes well. Less so on coconut cheesecake, but might tickle someones tastebuds.

As for made stuff, Flute is rather good. Still nothing on my now late great aunties wedding fruit cakes!

Also new Pet Shop and The Good Guys have a massive amount of free parking just across the road.

Cakes are great, coffee is good. I work in the same street and have never had a complaint about this place over the years.

Flute, or Riccardo’s in Jamison.

Park at Toyworld. Cake and Trinkets = Win Win.

+1 Flute.

dream cuisine

I once purchased 150 macaroons from Dream Cuisine and whilst said macaroons were nice, if not a tad expensive, the co owner I felt was quite rude. I wouldn’t bother with them again.

Silo’s tarts are brilliant ( and no mayo)

hey … what happened to the strikethroughs on Walmart? They were there in the msg preview … won’t be trying that malarkey again 😐
(See, SWMBO & I refer to CostCo as “Walmart” coz of the “people of Walmart” thing. Yes, thigh-slappingly hilarious, I know.)

Appreciate the sentiment, but it would be far better directed towards Michel’s … just awful. Cheesecake shop are merely consistently mediocre.

No mention of Walmart CostCo … good quality (yes, likely short of Flute standard), and ideal if you’re feeding an army.

Flute is very good, but finding a place to park there is less inspiring.

I’ve never been so can’t comment on the quality, the thing that stands out to me most on their website is their opening hours.. 8 – 3 weekdays seems quite limiting for most people, they also don’t have eftpos.

Another vote for Flute. Their opening hours are limited and last time I was there they didn’t have EFTPOS, but the cakes are divine and well priced.

Crafted is a business owned by a local person who does amazing custom-made cakes at good prices. We’ve had delicious gluten free birthday cakes from them before and can highly recommend the customer service and beautiful decorating.

Flute for sure. Their layered mousse cake is awesome!

Normally I wouldn’t take this approach to a question like this, but cakes are one thing where I think homemade really is best.

Seconded.

Coming from another country the realisation that the country you are making has a whole chain of shops dedicated to selling cheesecakes is rather a strange one. I think in Sydney there was also a chain called Pavlova Pantry. I believe that I have only ever purchased one cheesecake from a Cheesecake Shop in my entire twenty years in this (lovely) country. Similar experience when you realise that there are drive through bottle shops…

Personally I don’t buy or eat cakes, (just don’t like them unfortunately), but if I was going to I would not go to a franchisey type place. Some of the stuff out of the bakery at Fyshwick markets is nice although limited to citrus tarts/pecan pies. There’s also Bean & Grain at Fyshwick which has very nice looking things. Flute as well.

The Flute Bakery Fyshwick hands down, if i could post pics i would looks and taste good, unlike some!
