An alleged escapee from a correctional centre in Goulburn has been charged and will appear in court today.

Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 18 August 2015), a 28-year-old man allegedly escaped from the correctional centre in Goulburn, and was last seen in the vicinity of the centre about 12.50pm.

Officers attached to The Hume Local Area Command commenced an investigation.

Following an extensive search effort, about 10.50pm, police attempted to stop a Nissan ute, alleged to have been stolen, travelling on the Hume Highway at Marulan.

The vehicle allegedly failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued, before road spikes were deployed on the highway at Pheasant’s Nest.

The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old man, attempted to flee the scene; however was arrested a short distance away.

He was taken to Goulburn Police Station, where he was charged with escape lawful custody, illegal use of a motor vehicle, unregistered/uninsured, unlicensed driver, and police pursuit (Skye’s Law).

The man has been refused bail, and will appear at Goulburn Local Court today (Wednesday 19 August 2015).

Sorry to be a killjoy, but the media adviser in me can’t help it. As silly as it sounds, you have to use “alleged” when referring to anything he is actually charged with. Otherwise, if he is found not guilty of any of those things, he can essentially sue the NSW police for slander/libel.

I guess that’s fair enough. Good luck to anyone trying to prove he didn’t escape.

Haha yeah, but I don’t know, they could try the ‘your worship, suggesting my client escaped is ridiculous, this is clearly all just part of an elaborate fantasy cooked up by overzealous police in an effort to smear my client’s good name!’ defence…

And believe it or not, some morons have actually tried to argue (yes, in court) that they weren’t leading police on a chase, they were in fact simply ‘looking for a safe spot to pull over’.

Wow, the NSW plods make the press release efforts of the AFP look like Pulitzer Prize material!

I understand the need to use allegedly, but surely if the guy was an inmate and they picked him up outside of the jail then there is nothing alleged about his escape?!

… and how did he “allegedly” fail to stop when they had to chase him all the way to Pheasant’s Nest?

Glad they charged him with driving unlicensed!
