Sunday being a stunningly beautiful day, I thought it was too nice to be indoors. So a quick motorcycle ride took us to Murrumbateman, where we checked out the just-opened-this-week Flint in the Vines. Having had a good experience with the dinner menu at Flint in New Acton late last year, I knew the food would be worth the short trip to get there.
Shaw’s Winery is on Isabel Drive, just outside Murrumbateman. It was easy to find – well sign-posted from the main road. We arrived about 15 minutes after the breakfast menu finished, but just in time to get an outside table and enjoy the views over lunch. While we waited for our table, we compared the two Shaw winery rieslings at the wine tasting bar. I liked the dry riesling, my partner preferred the Germanic-style sweeter one.
The lunch menu was good – pizza from the wood-fired oven for $24 was big enough to share, and all the mains are under $25. We went for a mushroom pizza, which had white truffle oil involved (not that I would have known, I’m not really a foodie). The crust was very thin and crispy, and richer (like biscuit crust?) than usual pizzas. Despite being fully booked for lunch, the service was prompt. Definitely book if you’re thinking of heading out there, the manager said it’s been busy all week.
I’ll be back. The views and atmosphere would be perfect for a group booking, the indoor tables are very “I’m taking you somewhere special”, and the outside tables would make it easy for us to bring the kids without worrying about disturbing others.
