The end of the year is slowly approaching, and yet Canberra music plays on… at least according to The RiotACT Gig Guide for 18th to the 24th of October!
The marquee photo this week, taken by legendary Canberran photographer Adam Thomas, is of Andrew Galan with Okinawa Girls. And yes, in the interests of full disclosure both DJ Loz and I are in Okinawa Girls. This photo was taken during the National Folk Festival, in which we performed with Canberra’s poet laureate Andrew Galan in a frenetic medley of words, noise and melodies. We hope to see you at Smith’s Alternative this Friday, with two excellent artists in Abhi Gupta and Kid of Harith opening the night.
Friday night will feature a huge hip-hop line-up at Transit Bar with Mathas, Omar Musa, P.Smurf and Rapaport gracing the stage as part of their ‘Big Vacation’ tour. I will be having a chat to Omar and Mathas on LocalnLive this Friday. Meanwhile Happy Axe, who was recently nominated for two awards in the national heats for the National Live Music Awards, will be opening for Matilda Abraham at Smith’s Alternative.
Saturday will see the last Snowdroppers show at Transit Bar, wrapping up their decade long reign on top of the Australian music scene with the ‘We’re Calling It Quits’ tour with the incredible Barren Spinsters and Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers. Chumke will be reuniting with the help of Space Is Dead, Renegade Peacock and more at The Basement, while Sunday will see a huge name in Clowns coming through the nation’s capital with the help of Yoko Oh No, Needledick and Semen & Garfuckel.
And to start next week on an absolute high, Blade Gang, the duo behind one of my favourite local tracks for the year, will be playing at The Phoenix Bootlegs Sessions… HUGE!
