In amongst the many issues being discussed around planning and development in Canberra, several topics get lost.

One is about what sort of places do people really want to buy and live in – rather than deal with the limited options provided by developers.

The other issue is how do we move to ensuring that all options include quality housing that is energy efficient and includes room for living green infrastructure such as trees and flourishing green spaces?

These two issues should not be exclusive of each other.

If you are interested in these matters, the Inner South Canberra Community Council has arranged for residents to discuss these issues with two relevant ACT Ministers, Mick Gentleman and Shane Rattenbury.

This forum links with the government’s discussion paper, Housing Choices and Zero Net Emissions.

Through this discussion paper the ACT Government is investigating whether people’s housing needs are being met, and how to better meet these needs into the future.

At the same time, Canberra has a bold vision to drive down pollution through clean energy, better land use and more efficient transport and waste systems.

The ACT Minister for Planning and Land Management, Mick Gentleman MLA, will speak about the Housing Choices Discussion Paper – key points are:

  • How can the Government incentivise better housing choices to meet the needs of residents in the suburbs?
  • Would you like to see more townhouses, terrace houses and dual occupancies in your suburb?
  • What changes to zoning in your area would you support to improve housing choice?
  • How could design and build quality be improved to ensure adequate and satisfactory housing options?
  • If there is more quantity, but poor quality, has housing choice really improved?

The ACT Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Shane Rattenbury MLA, will speak about the Government’s Climate Change Strategy, which aims to significantly reduce Canberra’s emissions from energy, waste, transport and land use:

  • How will the Government ensure that future developments and urban planning minimise energy use, pollution and waste?
  • How can we ensure energy efficiency standards and better build quality that will stand the test of time?
  • How might greater housing density be reconciled with flourishing green spaces?
  • What options should we consider for reducing household waste and diverting organic waste from landfill?

This Public Forum with ACT Planning and Sustainability Ministers is being hosted by the Inner South Canberra Community Council (ISCCC).

Date/time: Tuesday 13 February 2018, 7 pm – 9 pm
Venue: Eastlake Football Club, 3 Oxley Street, Griffith.

A bit late to the party aren’t we? This conversation should have been held many years ago. Instead we have these treeless, souless, concrete abominations they pass off as new developments. You only have to look at Gungahlin to see the time for this conversation has long passed and is now in the damage control phase.
