I doubt that he activated his lights and siren because he got tired of waiting. Had he done so and had an accident in the process, he would be in deep, DEEP shit.

I dont think he put his lights on as he was pulling out, my reading is that he got impatient, turned the lights on then waited for the traffic to let him in having seen his flashing red and blues.

Maybe you lack an understanding of the road rules. If youre travelling along a road, and there is a road that joins at a T intersection, any traffic that comes to a stop has to give way to traffic already travelling at speed. The fact that the driver is a police officer doesnt change the fact that he was at a give way and had no right of way until the traffic had cleared. Failing to slow down to let a vehicle enter from a give way or stop sign, is hardly an offence or even hardly rude, its just the way traffic works.

I cant say Ive ever seen this trick used at a junction as described, but I have seen it done numerous times at a red light. The vehicle pulls up at the hold line, waits for a few seconds, turns the lights/sirens on, crosses the red light then lights/sirens off on the other side. Maybe I see it more often because I live only a couple of hundred meters from an arterial road with traffic lights, and a police station.

And although he may have jumped to the conclusion that this particular cop was abusing his powers, I happen to agree that cops shouldn’t do that, and that many of them do (as evidenced by those who turn on their lights for only a few seconds while they pass through a red light – if it’s an emergency, keep the lights on all the time). And they’re hardly wasting taxpayer dollars by sitting in traffic, since, you know, crime can happen anywhere. That cop sitting in traffic may have prevented someone nearby overreacting at being cut off and starting a road rage incident (like Ant maybe, after he saw the cop abusing his power 😛 )

Where I came from, its common courtesy to let someone in if there are no breaks in the traffic. Thats what helps traffic flow. If you grow up in the country, you learn how to drive with some manners. I do it often and people appreciate it. Obviously Cameron and ant are too hung up on trying to be assholes to care about anyone else.

I too call bullshit on the “slow down and let them in” routine – I have never seen someone do that, nor should they. Right of way, great when you have it, annoying when you don’t.

As for the cop using his siren, I’d rather he did that and be available to you know, police the city, rather than sit in traffic.

I’m quite sure the authors of all the venemous replies here would have been jumping over themselves to let the cop into the traffic! It’s plain to see that they save their venom for the ‘net, and are model citizens on the roads.

So, if you see a cop, or any other public official misusing their power for gain, you’d give them the thumbs-up? And there’s no way such events are news. You’re quite right.

And for the vicious little nasties who think everyone drives like they do, the cop did indeed hop into the very large gap I’d left. He fired up his lights to get across the NSW-bound lane.
