Where to buy a real Christmas tree at a good price these days?

As a child, I remember we used to be able to pick up Christmas trees at many numerous locations around Canberra.

But in this day and age, where does one find an affordable Christmas tree close to Canberra?

Just as a side issue, a friend laughed at our plastic Christmas tree and said it was a tacky thing to have. But I wonder if it’s actually better for the environment to have one plastic tree that will last a thousand years, or have all these pine trees that are watered just to be cut down and used for a few weeks?

Aren’t Christmas trees meant to be tacky?

A good point, but *surely* you wouldn’t say that if you saw the lovely angel I’ve made from a one-legged Barbie, gaffer tape, a pipe-cleaner and tin-foil?

Thanks for this but as it is based in England I don’t think we can translate it to Australia directly.

So, let me guess.

Your memory of real xmas trees being for sale everywhere in Canberra. It was before the pine forest burnt down right?

Let’s start up counter-sites for people to have the most ungreen Christmas possible. Surely Christmas is a bit too serious and solemn to be subjected to hit and giggle green wankery.

You mean dead pine trees? Bliss at Pialligo has a sign out saying they have them.

I noticed the old grog shop at the Belconnen markets is selling “real” Xmas trees. Maybe worth a look if you are out that way.

We needed ours on a weeknight so drove out to Christmas Tree Keng after work. You drive around the property til you see a tree you like, then cut it down yourself with a loaner handsaw. $48, any size, extra $2 if you want netting, free fridge magnet and lollies for the kids. Otherwise, try the usual weekend venues – the RSPCA at Weston, Bunnings at Tuggeranong (no idea about the north side) and the various farmers markets.

Canberra Christmas Markets at EPIC has the Christmas Tree Guy today and this weekend. http://www.epic.act.gov.au/whats-on/?eventId=141&timeframeId=971

RSPCA at Weston – about $50 from memory and for a good cause.

Heritage Nursery in Yarralumla has nice conifers in pots – can be reused year after year!
