ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has described a Greens motion (supported by the Liberals) in the Legislative Assembly calling on his party to cut ties with the Canberra Labor Club as provocative and defamatory.

“Here in the ACT, the Labor Party doesn’t simply get lobbied by the gambling industry. They are themselves a part of it,” Greens MLA Andrew Braddock told the Assembly on Tuesday (3 September).

“The Labor Club was originally set up for the express purpose of supporting the Labor Party, including financially. For decades, a slice of the club’s gambling profits would be used to fund the Labor Party … Labor are trust fund children, benefiting from the profits from gambling harm.”

Mr Braddock put forward a motion calling on ACT Labor to sever all of its connections to the Canberra Labor Club to eliminate its conflict of interest and donate $6,100,000 to an anti-gambling charity, an amount he says is equivalent to the investment returns the party receives from the club.

Chief Minister Barr announced his party would not support this.

“The motion… [is] provocative, defamatory and unreasonable, and not the sort of contribution that lends itself to form a consensus on gaming reform,” he said.

The motion was nevertheless passed with the support of the Canberra Liberals, although motions are symbolic in nature and do not change laws – the ACT Government is not required to enact it.

The Canberra Labor Club has four venues across the capital, with a total of 436 poker machines. According to its most recent annual report, these venues made over $18 million in revenue from their pokies in 2022. This report also stated that one of the club’s objectives is to “promote and support the Australian Labor Party”.

“It’s … worth remembering that while the tap has been turned off on the flow of money between club and party for the time being, there isn’t anything stopping it from being turned on again. There is nothing stopping the transfer of assets from other undertakings, like their new property development or hotel enterprises, from flowing across, all made possible by the liquidity provided by poker machines,” Mr Braddock.

ACT Labor and the Greens did, however, agree to the establishment of an independent inquiry to assist in advising the government on the steps necessary to develop and implement a club industry revenue, activity and worker transition plan.

This was welcomed by ClubsACT CEO Craig Shannon.

“The agreement by all three major parties to the establishment of an independent inquiry on the ACT Club industry and their social and economic role in the ACT is fundamentally important to achieve a sustainable industry and to allow an evidence-based approach to government policy going forward,” he said

“Canberra needs a viable club industry. Clubs are the great meeting and entertainment spaces for the ACT community. Policy outcomes that ignore the economic and social role of our industry only hurt Canberrans across the board.

“If clubs become unsustainable, the economic impact will flow through to the sports and community organisations funded and supported by ClubsACT members. This may leave government and taxpayers to pick up a sizeable cost.”

Craig Shannon of course ignores the cost to taxpayers of the insidious and widespread harms caused by the poker machines that he is dedicated to defending at all costs. A comprehensive analysis that includes the true health and social costs of the gambling harm caused by the pokie clubs would likely find that ACT taxpayers would be significantly better off if poker machines were banned completely.

Voting for the Greens is the biggest gamble of all, but I’m OK with TV ads exposing this

“promote and support the Australian Labor Party”.

That’s similar to the CPSU’s mission statement too!

I really expected better from Greens leader Shane Rattenbury but it seems the ratbag extremes are now running his party. Shane has really undermined his party with this latest stunt in scheming with the Canberra Liberals over gambling reform which he, as Gambling Minister, and his party have made little positive contribution to throughout the previous terms of government. Shane’s party’s ratbaggery and hypocrisy was on full display yesterday when his deputy was forced to apologise for provocatively wearing an Islamic keffiyeh into the assembly during debate arguing that she was just in a bad mood.

I am looking forward to the Canberra Liberals and many of their current candidates disclosing their strong links to religious and right wing lobby groups including Rise Up and Advance who provide significant funding to the party’s coffers at each election including the recent Voice referendum.

I also look forward to the Canberra Liberals disclosing their links to the gambling, building and construction industries who also contribute so much to the party’s coffers at every election.

I think you need to prove these links, “Jack D”, otherwise your claims are defamation.

Given that donations from building and construction industries are banned by law in the ACT your aspersions are alleging a criminal offence and are defamatory. Its all well and good to be a dyed in the wool supporter of your chosen party but to allege your opponents subvert the law just because your chosen party is under pressure isnt just poor form its despicable conduct.

It is debatable who is really under pressure leading up to this year’s Territory election twiggy6. We have a Liberal party who has been in opposition for 23 years in the news over the past number of weeks for all the wrong reasons! Again, we are seeing silly stunts and slogans from them which we see at every election because they have no policy substance and nothing else to offer. An opposition party that has lost seven territory elections, made no positive contribution to gambling reforms, criticising and voting against every proposal the government has ever put forward.

Now we have the Greens conspiring with them to wedge and undermine the government over gambling reforms because leader Shane Rattenbury, who is also Gambling Minister, and his party have made no positive contributions to any reforms throughout this or previous terms of government.

The Canberra Liberals used the party’s platform to run a highly divisive and hostile No campaign for the Voice referendum despite Canberra voters’ overwhelming support. The Liberals campaign was totally funded by right wing lobby group Advance.

Donations from property developers have been banned in the ACT after the 2020 election. This was because the Canberra Liberals were accepting donations from NSW property developers bypassing NSW laws banning them from donating to political parties. These donors had no apparent business in the ACT with no record of them ever working or applying to work here. One high profile developer appeared before ICAC over the allegations.

These are facts and on the record!

What has the yes/no campaign got to do with poker machines? That’s right, nothing! And considering that both Parton and Lee voted yes, and that Lee said that there weren’t any party orders and the Liberals could vote with their conscience, your statement is, once again, erroneous. And drivel.
Always trying to deflect when you know you’ve lost the argument Jack.
Why does Labor keep you on the payroll.

I enjoy pointing out the hypocrisy of the Canberra Liberals Gregg Heldon!

While we are on the topic, maybe you can tell me who the real leader of the Canberra Liberals is?

Why did Elizabeth Lee, who is supposedly the leader, allow the party’s platform to be used to run a highly divisive and dishonest No campaign in the Voice referendum, all funded by right-wing lobby group Advance?

Not once during the debate did Elizabeth Lee, Mark Parton and Nicole Lawder (the pretend and only moderates in the party), put their hands up or campaigned in support of the Voice to parliament, instead allowing the party to run a highly divisive campaign with right-wing funding.

Is a vote for Elizabeth Lee in this year’s election really a vote for Jeremy Hanson and the dominant right-wing who really run the party?

Watching these losers eat each other is hilarious. 🤣
