Canberra’s nerds bow to no-one in their mastery of the nerd arts.

So it’s great to hear that Canberra UAV are being written up in the SMH for their pioneering work:

An unmanned aerial drone was able to find a dummy of a missing bushwalker with no human intervention in what CSIRO believes is a world-first for a non-military drone.

The Outback Rescue Challenge, a competition for developers of “unmanned airbourne vehicles” (UAVs), was held at Kingaroy in Queensland from Monday to Wednesday.

CSIRO researchers say the performance this week by amateur group Canberra UAV means drones could be assisting rescue workers in as little as five years.

Sadly they didn’t get a water bottle to Outback Joe so will have to enjoy an encouragement award.

(Thanks to PostalGeek for the tip)

Anything but cool. If a drone can find a human being “without human input” then what is to stop drones being programmed to kill any targeted category of humans? Such as you?

Think about it.

There are approximately 27,000 ways to kill any targeted category of humans, such as me. More than 60% of that are both easier and cheaper than this.

But to indulge your fantasy for a moment, if this one actually were to become a problem, it’s really not that difficult to hide oneself from an aerial observer.

The drone should really be bright red or some other more intrusive colour if it is designed to rescue people. Then the lost person may know someone has found them or is looking for them. At the moment it looks like it is designed to blend into the bush.

How high do they fly?

Also if it crashes and its GPS is whatever is disabled, it would be more likely to be found if it was red.

Apparently they are not permitted to be flown above 400 feet unless they receive special permission. One would think that if they crashed there wouldn’t be much to salvage so colour would be superfluous, although bright orange candy would certainly be eye catching.

Nice! Well done Canberra UAV

P.S. “Water bottle” is another name for a “bottle filled with water” – the competition is designed around live saving. I hope your brain doesn’t explode when you see the Westpac chopper at the beach.

One man’s Westpac Rescue chopper is another man’s Yankee Air Pirates’ gunship.

There’s so much more to you than poetry (and weightlifting)! Hahahaha! 🙂

well the military drones can already do this. But no need to get too worried until the drones can service and fuel themselves and build more drones.

wow, very cool

That’s cool! Nerds are awesome

Once we get them dropping those “water bottles” a bit closer to target, then we’ll be in business.

+1

When I saw the earlier post about this thing, I assumed the required proximity of the “water bottle” to the “missing person” simply corresponded to the soft-target lethal radius of the munition.

So the flying cars they promised in the 60s may not be looking any closer to reality, but at least we’re one step closer to being able to make our annoying neighbour’s house resemble down town Fallujah.
