Great! Now bring back the Northbourne Super Cruise and bring back the former glory.

They did. Last year. 15,000 in attendance.

20,000+ actually …. and expect it to be bigger this year.

While im a supporter of the event, you would have to also understand with the new owners coming in a couple of years ago you cant just go from having the alcohol to no alcohol.

I do believe that the organisers are phasing in over time mid strength alcohol similar to the cricket etc.

20,000? I would love to have this figure verified.

Let me put 4,000 people to you and that includes the people crossing Northbourne Avenue at lunchtime when it was happening. Based on the fact that I saw more than 5 handheld video cameras in cars that were filming the crowd, I would say the promoters have every opportunity to verify any claims of crowd numbers they may have. I did attend this cruise as I think it is one of the good parts of the event and was impresed with the quality of the vehicles as well as the behaviour of the participants however there was certainly not 20,000 people there.

As far as how this event affects me, I do not dine out in the 7 day period around Summernats (certainly not the 4 days eveyone talks about) as places like Civic, Kingston, Emu Bank & Manuka will all generally have a number of these “Summernats Participants” hanging around making them unpleasant for myself and my family. This is my opinion as it is how it affects me.

Having said that, I have been inside this event both during the day and at night and it is not somewhere I want myself or my family to visit.

Jeesus, you really do have a stick up your butt.

It does seem that way, doesn’t it. Sheesh!

If being passionate about something whilst ensuring I remain factual based on first hand experience qualifies me as resembling something of a dagwood dog the yes, guilty as charged!

I think I prefer that rather than sitting on the sidelines throwing barbs based on something I heard from a friend at a pub who knew someone else who heard something

Pun intended. But in all seriousnes it really is only a small fraction of the attendees that cause trouble.

Yes of course EPIC is in Mitchell. Nothing could possibly spill over into neighbouring suburbs. Especially with all the fine accomodation, food and late night shopping options in Mitchell.

EPIC hosts heaps of large events every year but there is only one that causes so much grief (or infact, any grief what-so-ever) for the residents of nearby suburbs.

Braddon, Reid, Campbell, Turner, those are residential suburbs. Sure the lines are blurred in Civic; there are plenty of apartment blocks. I don’t think you could go around calling it residential though…

I attended this event too, driving a nice 65 Cadillac, now did you see the entire amount of people lining pretty much the entire way from London Circuit all the way up to EPIC?

I was at an event at Sydney Dragway a few weeks back with 4000 people, … I can assure you it was nothing compared to the people lining the streets for the CityCruise

Ah, a riot-act classic topic of discussion with all the usual whines.

All the interstate yobbo’s- hey, don’t forget there are plenty of our home grown yobbo’s attend too.

Unruly behaviour- no more than usual, it’s just concentrated in a smaller area.

How much will it cost the taxpayer? – nothing. Privately run event with minimal government funding. Government puts in something like $50,000 a year. They’d get that back in fines that weekend easy. Plus some. Good input for the local economy at a time when everyone in this city abandons their local businesses and spends all their money down the coast.

Hell for residents of the inner north- and probably gives a break to residents of Charnwood, Holt ,Latham and the entire Tuggeranong Valley.

Simple answer, the bogans would not pay their 100 odd dollar ticket entry or be able to spend 7 dollars on a can of vb. only real enthusiasts would turn up. Great for enthusiasts, but bad for business.

+1 million. Cars, crowds and booze aren’t a good mix.

If the promoters/owners were truly interested in making Summernats “family friendly” as they claim then they would ban alcohol, or at least restrict the sale of booze until later in the evenings. Open the taps at 7pm and let the yobs get rowdy.

-1 Million

Then all the drunk yobbo’s will be pre-drinking outside the venue. pushing a majority of the the drunk rowdy behavior out on the streets when it would normally occur inside the venue.

Keep the drunks in the venue and not on the streets.

Jethro said :

I also note you don’t deny the fact that the at least some of the Summernats visitors are anti-social douchebags who willingly flout the law and treat our city and its residents like crap.

Nope, not denying that at all, alcahol + drugs + young blokes = yobbo behavoir. It is not just related to Summernats.

I grew up in a tourist area, the dickhead factor comes out in a lot of people when they are on holidays, its if they dont have to take responsibility for their actions. We had to bear the cross for the tourist dollars that came into the town.

You were getting a 4 day taste of what many tourist destinations around Australia put up with every day.

Yep its a bitch but its not Summernats that is the cause perse, its a part of society. We only notice here because it wakes the sleeping dead for 4 days……….

I will add this, I have not been to the Nats for 10 years, I think its boring & would rather be riding my bike on some singletrack but I wont appose it as sections of the community wants it, at least it pays for itself to some extent unlike Floriade which is totally funded by the government. I dont go to Floriade either but the 1 minute I have to wait at the traffic lights in the morning & afternoon is a small price to pay that I dont really care about.

I for one think it’s a great event but poorly located. I just don’t agree with the behavior shown by SOME (just some) of the people who attend.

If you want too talk about poorly located, remember when they tried to hold car racing in the parliamentary triangle?

Where did I ever say that. I said that every single Summernats sees an explosion of that type of behaviour. To deny that is ridiculous.

I personally don’t have an issue with the city hosting a car show. In fact, if it weren’t so overpriced I would probably go along. My boy is mad about cars.

But people do have legitimate complaints about the type of behaviour that a significant minority of Summernats attendees demonstrate throughout the week.

I meet the target demographic of ‘Nats and i’ve never been inspired to visit. I suppose it pays for itself through RBTs and vehicle defect notices.

As someone now living in the ‘burbs Summernats doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

However, when I lived in the inner South, it was pretty disruptive. Every spare serviced apartment would be rented out to Summernats visitors, which would be fine if their definition of having a good time didn’t involve playing doofdoof music until 5am every night, doing burnouts and do-nuts on the street all night, wandering around drunk smashing beer bottles on the road all night and generally being anti-social pricks.

I don’t have an issue with people enjoying cars and wanting to go to a car show. I do have an issue with the massive number of anti-social douchebags who come in and treat our town and its residents like crap for a week.

Ohhhh, the Batemans Bay residents would have a violin out for you………….

TBH, you decided to live near some serviced apartments & there is always a chance that that could happen (obviousy a bigger chance at Summernats time but a chance no less).

Funny it never happened at any other time of year but, right on cue, every Summernats season it did.

And I don’t see why living near serviced apartments means you should just put up with people smashing beer bottles outside your house and doing burnouts up and down your street all night.

I have no problem with such an event occurring, I would even go if it wasn’t for one problem; the clientele. For residents of Watson and Downer Summernats is a week spent boarded up inside their homes after dark for fear of being assaulted by the roaming mobs of degenerates who flock to the cheap accommodation options nearby. They spend most of their time roaming the streets between their trashed motel room and EPIC throwing bottles and generally harassing anyone brave enough to be outdoors after 6pm.

I went to the first ever summernats and paid 20 bucks for a face full of smoke, never got to see the actual burnouts – hope they have improved the visual side since then.

As for those wankers who want to enjoy all the cafe latte aspects of city life with none of the inconveniences – f*** off to Paris. Yes, when will this tomfoolery end? Another seven years of the interstate unwashed laying rubber through Caroline Le Coutier’s community gardens.

But then, I do love the smell of methanol in the morning!

Why not ban all off the national events we host and we can then complain that our hotels are empty and our economy has turned to more crap than it already is. I thought money made the world go around. Bring on the Summernats and any other nation events we can host.

I assume the spin doctors will be along shortly to tell us about the economic benefits the event brings to our city. I mean heck, what is a few assaults combined with the entire city having to change it’s habits and general feelings of safety, when the city is drawing a huge fictitious financial windfall from this “Event”?

Please someone put an end to this madness?

Really? The only change I’ve made to my habits is to spend a bit *more* time out and about over the summernats weekend in order to see nicely restored cars cruising the streets, for free. Not once have I ever felt unsafe doing so.

The entire city has to change its habits? The pedestrian lights on Comm Ave during Floriade are more of an inconvenience during my daily routine than the Nats. And given the number of nose-to-tail accidents I saw a couple of weekends back it’s probably more dangerous too.

They should have announced this on “Tits out Tuesday”

BelcoMan, got stats to back that up?

What habits do you believe you have to change?

When 100,000 people come along to an event, do you believe they dont spend any money? It’s be biggest event of its type in the Southern Hemisphere, and I’ve actually got friends flying over from Europe and the united States this year for it (friends from Europe its their 3 consecutive time) … but yer … they dont spend any money
