Canberra's bushfire sunset last night

A smoky sunset after yesterday’s bushfires scattered all around the Canberra region made for very challenging photography. For this beginner anyway. There was so much smoke, the sun was blowing out very badly. There are probably some Photoshop tricks to get around this, but I don’t know them. I think the best photo is this one of Black Mountain – without the sun in it.

Limited post-processing. It just wasn’t necessary last night…

There are a couple more over on my blog.

🙂 Hmm yes – between astronomy studies, doing public viewings, teaching myself photography and astrophotography, and trying to learn Photoshop (the guitar lessons are on hold), it might have been a bit of a squeeze…
(Catching up wth everything that was on hold for the last 6 years…)

Nice work Al,
Well done

Thanks folks.

Just got notice through from Flickr/Yahoo US HQ that they are featuring the top photo in one of their Editors Picks galleries:

Woo hoo! Hanging around MartyO is starting to pay off…
Training wheels are off.

Top stuff!

I, too, like the “coloured” monochrome effect (if there is such a thing).

sure is – monochrome just means variations on one colour – fro its saturation to back, to its total dimishment to white. this shot of al’s is a wonderful sepia/orangy-brown instantiation. noice… and well done having it showcased – quite deserving (from one with a diploma in photography)

Think I heard some weather bloke on the radio claiming it was mostly dust in the afternoon sky yesterday. Nice pics all the same.

Even if true, I imagine it would be related to the bush fire conditions.

It was dust, related to the high winds. Nothing to do with the bushfires.

It was red, related to the sunset.

But seriously, of course it was both. The dust storms up around Gungahlin were getting heavy early in the morning. But you could smell the smoke too.

While it is not my intenetion to “rain on your bushfire” (as the images are delightful), with the greatest respect, there was no smoke.

I was in Gungahlin, and I certainly smelt smoke.

Great shots, Al.

Stop with the ‘beginner’ modesty, Al, before it becomes dated. You take great photographs.
