ACT Government hunting for centenary babies

By Barcham - 13 March 2013 2

Are you a baby? Were you born yesterday? Do you like medals? The Government would like to give you one. A medal? Oh they’re like pretty round things that look nice. I don’t know what they taste like. Just get one, trust me.

Babies born on 12 March 2013, we’d like to hear about you. It was a double birthday: yours and
the city of Canberra.

The ACT Government will present centenary medallions to Canberra babies born on 12 March
2013, which is the 100th anniversary of the day on which Canberra was named.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher will formally recognise babies born on 12 March 2013 in a centenary
medallion ceremony later this year.

The parents of those born on Tuesday, 12 March 2013, are encouraged to contact the ACT
Government by calling Canberra Connect.

Nomination forms for Canberra Day newborns can be requested by calling Canberra Connect on
13 22 81.

For further information, enquiries are welcome to Chief Minister’s support and protocol on
6205 0192 or 6205 3031.

What’s Your opinion?

Does this/every govt make an effort to get things arse-about? Parents are encouraged to contact Canberra Connect? If only the govt operated some sort of registrar of births. Maybe they could throw in deaths, and even marriages. Heaven forfend this sort of information should reside in some sort of government-managed, searchable database.

Seriously – one query. A one-liner at that. A dozen letters in the mail. Sorted. Might take as much as an hour for a competent human. But no, somehow a press release is the way to go.

Would have thought that using the database would be a breach of confidentiality.

Presumably a committee was involved. And three months of weekly, two-hour meetings. Strike me roan.
