Another Cotter Road crash leaves girl critical

After a couple of RiotACT readers alerted us to an accident on Cotter Road on Thursday, another accident has left an 8 year old girl in a critical condition.

A van T-boned the family’s sedan, which in itself wasn’t that bad an accident. Unfortunately the van was carrying a load of timber palings on the roof which slid off, smashed through the car window and hit the poor girl in the head.

A timely reminder to tie down your loads properly.

The comment was indeed sarcastic. What irritates me is that every day of the week you see morons driving utes and trucks with crap thrown unsecured in the back, you see trailers with uncovered loads, and various vehicles with stuff thrown on the roof. People seem unconcerned about being booked for such offences, and yet objects coming free while in transit are a major danger.

This is one of the reasons I strongly support having much more marked police presence on our roads. I don’t want these people booked – I don’t want them to do it in the first place!

It’s 80k/hr along that bit of road isn’t it? I would have thought that was fairly reasonable.

I take it that previous post was a pun.

The speed limit on the Cotter Road is already 20km under comparable driving conditions.

While I empathise with the victim and anybody concerned with this issue, I’m sure all parties involved will note that speed reductions is not a way to improve road conditions on an otherwise open two way road with no built up areas on either side, and appropriate unbroken white lines in regions of limited visibility.

Not only would a reduction in the speed limit be blatantly disregarded, it would limit the effectiveness of legitimate 70km/60km/50km limited areas where there is a genuine need for people to slow down, like school frontages.

Another tragic accident, caused by stupidity and carelessness. Better reduce the speed limit.
