Where are the best hair salons in Canberra? Photo: Adam Winger.

A stylish hair cut that suits your face, colouring, personality and lifestyle is a major boost to your confidence.

If you’ve ever been to a hair salon that doesn’t cut it, you’ll understand the importance of choosing a skilled and experienced stylist who will make you look amazing. But with so many hair salons in Canberra, how do you know which one to choose?

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a hair salon, and share where to find the best in Canberra

What makes a great hair salon?

Choosing the right hair salon will get you the best cut and colour and take the stress out of worrying about how you’ll look. The stylists at the best hair salons will advise you on the best shape and colour for your hair.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a hair salon.

  • Experience. Great hair salons have fully trained and experienced stylists who know how to achieve a look that flatters your features. They also have strong support staff who keep the salon running smoothly.
  • Reputation. One way to gauge the quality of a salon is to read their website to see what credentials they hold, whether they’ve won awards and how long they’ve been in business. You can also check out reviews online.
  • Price. You’ll want to choose a hair salon that suits your budget and gives you value-for-money.
  • Technique. The best hair salons are skilled at cutting, colouring and styling, so you don’t have to head to multiple places to look fabulous.
  • Hygiene. You’ll want a salon with excellent hygiene practices – one that is neat, tidy and super clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get my hair cut and coloured?

The cost varies depending on factors like the type of hair you have, the style you're after and what services you want. With colouring, for example, adding foils to your hair will increase the cost. Check to see if your salon offers a free consultation session and ask for a specific quote then.

How do I determine what hairstyle is best for my face shape?

Stylists at quality salons are trained to help you determine the best hairstyle for your face shape. They’ll also consider other factors like the texture of your hair, your personality and your lifestyle.

Which colour will work best for me?

Choosing colour is an art in and of itself and a quality colourist will talk you through options based on factors like your eye colour, skin tone and even the best colour for the season.

What happens if I’m not happy with my cut and colour?

Check the salon’s policy before you visit the salon to see what will happen if you’re not happy with the end result. If the salon did exactly what you asked for, but you don’t like what you see, you may not get a full refund. If the salon didn’t do what they agreed to, you can push for a full refund or ask if the salon will fix your hair for free.

Can I just take a photo from a magazine in and ask for that look?

You can take a photo in, but a quality stylist will give you advice on whether it’s realistic to achieve that look. Sometimes clients (who aren’t experts in cutting and colouring) don’t understand that a certain cut and colour – even though they love it – might not work for their type of hair or the shape of their face.

Bond Hair Religion in Kingston have been doing my hair for years. There are many hairdressers, but not all are good at cutting. Bond is. When I go to have a haircut, I want to know that I won’t come out looking awful for the next 6 weeks because the cut is not what it should be! They are excellent also at colouring and styling. Everyone comes out of a hairdressers looking good, but do they still look that way 3 weeks later. If they go to Bond they will!

Shine Hairdressing ??

I’m desperately seeking a decent hairdresser! I’ve had a few horrible experiences and am now so scared to go somewhere new!

My most recent experience was at Hair+Her in Gungahlin. The salon itself was beautiful but that’s where it ends.

The girl doing my hair berated me for having damaged hair and made me feel like I was an idiot. I’ve gone black to blonde so yes, I am expecting there to be some degree of damage, but I don’t expect to be spoken down to about it – that’s why I go to a professional so I don’t ruin my hair completely.

She refused to cover my greys on my regrowth and do foils instead told me she would put a treatment on my hair and tone everything down so it wasn’t so blocky. I sat for ages and listened to the staff talk, laugh and carry on like they were in a club.

Myself and two other clients played musical chairs between the basins, the table and the chairs for a good hour whilst we listened to this carry on. The staff seemed more interested in doing the receptionist’s hair than anything!!

Then my stylist told me she had to be done in 20 minutes so she could go pick up a new car – even though she’d had me sat waiting for 2+ hours.

I should’ve walked out but wanted to give them a chance!

Can anyone recommend a good hairdresser that can help me transition from black to blonde?

Thank you!

Off London is hands down, no debate, THE most pleasing hair experience!
So so happy I was able to go in today, thank you. Thankyou!

No need to ask for any Stylist in particular as you can be sure, and I say this after having had my hair done here for quite a few years now, that whomever you get will be skilled at their craft.
So saying however, if I book far enough in advance, Paul may be available to do the cutting and what a treat that is! You know when you just can’t quite get the fringe or whatever right?? He can.
And Adriana coloured my hair today, amazing! No words, just love it! So lucky and so grateful to all you guys that you are making it through this Pandemic so far ?and you’re still there for us making us shine ? Thankyou

I followed recommendations here and found Wayne Robinson – Now at Fabric at kingston btw…. I went today and am seriously so happy with my haircut. I have curly hair & avoid haircuts because I’m usually disappointed – curly hair is tricky! I totally agree with other comments – Wayne really listens, is very attentive and clearly understands curly hair issues. He took extra time to blow dry my hair really nicely as well (not easy to get right!). 10 out of 10 and big thumbs up for Wayne!

My mother cuts my hair. She doesn’t charge. She does as well as any hair dresser I have been to.

I haven’t been to a hairdresser in maybe twenty years. Are women still charged more than men to have their hair cut?

Cut It Long!!! I’ve tried alot of hairdressers in the past 20yrs of getting my hair dyed & no one has come close to having skills like Peta. She’d better never retire because I would have to leave Canberra to find a hairdresser who can do what she does. Absolutely a most talented artist with hair & always keeping studied up with all new hair product technology. Definitely Peta at Cut It Long.

Peta from Cut It Long. Her knowledge on hair is extraordinary! She has managed my hair throughout several pregnancies, kept it healthy and looking natural (while hiding my greys)! She ensures her knowledge and training is current of products and moving trends within the industry. She’s amazing! She also keeps my hubby looking fab with men’s cuts and beard trims!

The Gungahlin barber Dylan Limon was amazing when cutting my hair. Highly recommend this gentleman for any style of haircut. From the male before me reviving a fade to my long hair. He tends to all customers needs with incredible precision. Amazing.

Well, we seem to have a lot of really good hairdressers/stylists in Canberra. Aren’t we lucky?
I want to share my stylist in the list. Jenni at Bond Hair Religion in Kingston is outstanding. Not only does she do great things with my double crown & double cowlic & keep it interesting, her salon also does exciting things with my young adult daughter.
Also, she is very environmentally aware, recycling something like 98-99% of everything that goes through her salon, including chemicals. She raises money for survivers of child abuse by going things like walk Kakoda & has this year set up her own charity I think.
As if this were not enough, she has taken out so many professional awards I can’t count, the latest being recieved in Darwin for trainer of the year or something. She’s stunning on all fronts.

One for the guys! I have to give a shout out to my dear friends – Darren Jones, who many will know from The Hairdressing, and Nicolle Keyes, marketing guru for FashFest this year – who have just realised a long-held dream in opening up their new retro-styled barbershop.

Classic, simple cuts, trims and shaves with old-fashioned customer service – and you can have a beer! #winning

Martine from Capital Hair at Parliament House is awesome!

Peta Jackson at Cut it long in Theodore. She is an anmazing person and the BEST hairdresser I know!

The gals at Cooleman Hair in Cooleman Court. Very friendly and always do a great job at a good price.

Peta at Cut It Long is by far Canberras best hairdresser. I’ve been to 5 of the salons on the list above and none compare to Peta. Her knowledge and passion for hair is amazing, I won’t go anywhere else!

charizard198411:02 pm 12 Dec 16

No one knows hair like Peta from Cut It Long. She’s so much fun to be around and always make sure you walk out looking and feeling like a rockstar.

Peta at Cut It Long is amazing. I have a tempremental scalp and it has caused much anxiety (and discrimination) in the past. She has made me feel at ease and has helped find products that I dont react to and has given much guidance.
It has taken me a long time to find someone I can trust and isnt just there to do a job. She genuinely cares about the end result

Peta at Cut it Long in Theodore – by far the best in Canberra!

Smitten closed and moved to Kingston and is now called something like ‘A brace of Hares’.

My vote goes to Amanda at Simona in Torrens. One of the few I’ve come across who cat cut curly hair. They aren’t open at the weekend or Mondays, but are open late every other day which is miles better than any other hairdresser which gets booked up at the weekends only. They also don’t push products at you.

Danny from Hair by Danny & Jess in Kingston gets my vote.

Naz at TGs Fyshwick is a superstar colourist! Has been fixing my colour gradually after a stuff up at another salon this time last year.

If, like me, your normal salon makes a dreadful mistake and accidentally dyes your hair wicked witch black, there is still hope! I have very long, thick, frizzy, unruly hair and four separate high-end Civic colour specialist salons told me there was nothing I could do without risking a huge reddish Afro if I tried to return it to its normal brown. Then I decided to try one more option and stopped in at Sing Song in Westfields Woden two days ago and they completely restored it to its healthy, brown best with a top notch balayage for a flat $200. So, at the risk of losing my access to instant appointments due to higher customer volume, I must offer the highest praise for and recommend Sing Song in Woden.

Innovative wigs in Braddon are amazing- http://innovativewigscanberra.com.au/ I have been going to them for the past 2 years and it is always a great experience there. I recently tried their wigs too you know with all the Kylie Jenner craze going around. They were great. Does anybody know any other wig places in Canberra?

Visited the beautician at Canberra Hair and Beauty in Belconnen last week and was so impressed that today I strayed from my normal hairdresser (who was on other side of town, had to book weeks in advance, $$$ & he was sometimes an artiste that made me wait). I’m normally happy to pay handsomely for an excellent wash, cut and blow dry for my hard to control hair, but today the cost (for me) was very reasonable and the cut excellent. There is free parking at the door, I had a complementary plunger coffee, the aircon was lovely and my young hairdresser (who had great hair herself – that always reassures me) was so quick. They are hard to find, their entry is off the carpark behind Kingsley’s Chicken in Belco, I think the address is Rae Street.

Emma and the girls at Antique Salon – soon to be at the Next Gen in Lyneham, they also have a salon at Bonner – The Hairdresser and the Barber.
Every time you visit these guys, you leave feeling fantastic, the products they use are great, they really listen to what you want and the service is fantastic. Wouldn’t go anywhere else!

Belconnen Hair Design in Nettlefold Street. Sean and the team are awesome!

Prink in Geils Court Deakin.

Monet at Southlands. Matched my colour perfectly and made a few simple but clever changes to my style that updated my look. I’ve been back twice since and still feel that I get excellent service.

I am looking for a hair and make-up stylist for a photo shoot of 21 year old male – is there anyone in the Canberra region? I’d prefer a male, or a female who has experience of male models.

Hair by Charles in Civic is fantastic.
But I have the long, thick, co-operative hair that hairdressers like to play with but don’t get too very often… (because it’s also that the girls tend to have this type of hair are lazy with it and it takes ages at a hairdresser).

My wife and I live in the Mode3 Building on Lonsdale St above the Axis Hairdressing Salon. The place is always full. My wife who is a client of Adam booked a haircut walking in off the street on a Saturday morning, The salon was full but they said they could do it if I waited 20 min. I was taken to a waiting area that resembled a cool micro cafe. They had a selection of beverages that blew my mind. Peroni beer, a wine of the day(I think it was a white/champagne) A variety of coconut water, juice, Coffee, herbal and regular teas…???????????? I was impressed. After one of the best coffees I’ve had in Lonsdale St(and I’m not joking) I was taken in to my chair, the person taking me in asked me to autograph the mirror? Cool, I wrote my name on the mirror. I had a brief chat about the cut, I like a fade with a part. Amazing shampoo/massage. Haircut was without doubt the best I’ve ever had

Axis might make a better cafe than hairdressers then, depending on what you value!

I didn’t want to hang around a noisy hairdresser salon for hours so I asked Gianni for an appointment at the quietest time, 9am on a Tuesday. I was kept waiting nearly half an hour before the consult with Adam, then again for a while after the wash so a trim (no colour, no change, he’d cut it at least 20 times before) took an hour and half. Not worth it.

Axis is a salon that is proud of its high positive energy, which music is a large part of, Axis isn’t open for clients on Tuesday mornings. 8:30-11:30am on Tuesday’s for the Last 22years have been allocated to closed in salon training. If your appointment was at 9am, it would have had to have been on a Wednesday or Saturday because they are the only days I start at 9am. It’s highly unlikely that I would run 30min late for my first appointment at 9am, but it may have been a day that the traffic was bad after doing school drop off for the kids, I’m not perfect. If I have cut your hair 20 times before I would have hoped you know me well enough to call me regarding your experience than post it here, and there is no way it would have taken 1.5 hours to cut your hair. Feel free to email me adam@axishair.com.au if you would like to discuss further, I take customer feedback seriously as a major part of my business development strategies

Kind regards

i have heard a lot about this la bimbi hair salon.
never tried though. If there are some cheap but still good salons , please tell 😛

it doesn’t NEED to be redone every 6-8 weeks. You CHOOSE to do that.

The sky won’t fall in if you don’t colour your hair as you do now, and you can accept what mother nature has given you and grow old gracefully. okay- you might look like a skunk with a stripe down the middle until it grows out, or you an cut it short and start again.

If you don’t like the money side of things, that’s fine, but nobody is putting a gun to your head forcing you to do it….

A price comparison is a good idea. I’ve been loyal to my hairdresser for nearly 20 years but the prices are high and getting very close to the $300 mark for colour and cut – which needs to be repeated every 6 – 8 weeks. I try to save money by not going to the premier cutter but it is just getting too expensive. Am going bohemian and am now at month 4 without a cut or colour.

Grace at Shine hair salon in the city is fantastic. Always has great ideas and the service at this salon is second to none. I have been going here for about four years definitely worth a try.

At a reasonable price try CIT Hair and Beauty school at Reid.
Appointments are available 9am–4:30pm, Monday – Thursday.

I’d be interested in a bit of a price comparison between hairdressers and the services they offer. OVer the years I’ve found a massive difference in price for the same services, with no discernible difference in the outcome. Next hair in Braddon was the most expensive colour I ever had – around the $300 mark for a half head of foils, whereas a mobile hairdresser did just as good a job of the same service for $120.

Hairdressers are too expensive for me. I would rather spend my saved money elsewhere. I find they are a waste of money and time, although time is personal and how you want to spend it is up to the individual. I just find going to a hairdresser boring. I get my hair cut for free. My mother cut it last night for me. It’s many years since I’ve paid to have my hair cut.

Amy Birchall10:10 am 26 Mar 15

My worst hair disaster was trying to go from dyed dark brown to blonde with a chemical stripper from the chemist. Never again.

I ended up with bright orange hair like Ronald McDonald and had to wait two weeks to get it fixed. $300 and several hours later, and it was still more orange than blonde. A very expensive mistake!

Easily Sid at Price Attack in Woden Plaza. Stumbled over him by accident and several woman at my work have changed long term stylists because of his amazing cuts, personality and price. He is honest and refreshing and a little cheeky. I adore him and would recommend him to anyone.

When I was a kid my father used to refer to a lame joke as “a seven day joke” (week/weak).

I wonder what he would call a joke which takes more than four years for someone to get.

Definitely Cataldo’s in the city. Fantastic stylists – http://www.cataldos.com.au – They’re in Woden too I think.

Edge Hair at O’Connor shops, my wife is always happy with them.

Hi all – follow up to this is that Hairhouse Warehouse opened in Gungahlin just before Xmas 2012, and I thought I would give them a go….SUCCESS! I haven’t had any major things done there but a good haircut and blow dry with a conditioning treatment set me back $60 or so, which I think is pretty good considering my hair is long and thick and onerous to ‘do’. Amanda and the girls are all friendly, family affair I think and there is a mixed clientele meaning they are able to handle modern and more traditional requests. Not super posh, and located opposite Woolworths but for good value and good results this is worth considering.

I love all these “what about insurance if something went wrong” comments.

Last time something went wrong with a haircut was at Tony and Guy after a fantastic photo shoot. The hair looked great at the shoot and terrible after.

It cost to get it fixed at a model/actress specialist but where was the insurance supposed to come into it? Do you people actually launch legal action in response to a bad haircut?

I would also be careful about insurance issues. Often cheaper hairdressing comes at a price and if something were to happen, and the person wasnt insured you would be left in the cold.
Having someone come to your home you dont know also carries a risk.
I know hairdressers who are salon based, insured and professional who will visit peoples homes if you are disabled and unable to leave the home for some reason, but they charge salon rates. Usually not a surcharge for travel if you are in the canberra area.

Yes, this site would be so much better with no jokes in serious threads about hairdressers in Belconnen. Those of us who contribute nothing of substance here should really go away, and leave it to those happy rollers who drop by occasionally just to up-style the tone.

For the perm of our natural lives.

Or “capital” punishment …. let’s knot go there …

That’s dyer. Let’s stop this shocking teasing.

Ignore them. You usually get at least one idiotic comment for every post you make. The incredible value of the riot act is worth developing a bit of a tough skin. 🙂

Or maybe some people are just a bit cynical about astroturfing?

“Does anyone know about the awesome new gym/cafe/rag shoppe/double glazing shop/etc that’s opened next to the blah, blah, blah….?”

Thanks for the info 🙂

Its Hair Spectrum from the Westfield mall. They have notices all over their current salon advising customers of the pending move. The hairdresser I spoke to said they were moving because most of their clientele is public servants, so the new location will be closer for them. I wonder, though, if the rent Westfield charge may also be a factor.

I hear the hair dresser in Florey will be moving when there new premises is fitted out.
Could be them.

Nah he’s stepped up in the world coz since 2010 he’s been a property agent with Ubertas Group, responsible for selling apartments in a St Kilda Road 50-storey complex, with a focus on international buyers. So the only person’s hair he’ll be running his hands through is a certain redhead!

I so agree!

Not sure about the creepy remark…what the? My question is entirely innocent. As I said, I been to two very good hairdressers who work from home here in Ocean Grove, and I thought there must be some in Canberra too, given the bigger population.

Sorry, I hadn’t thought about the privacy aspect when I posted the question. But what’s the difference between someone listing their business name on Gumtree or elsewhere, and finding a positive recommendation on here, with a mobile number?

Thank you for the comment re the Public Health Risk Activity Licence. It’s not something I’ve thought of!

And Dancing Djin (great name, btw)…yes I’d seen the mobile hairdresser thread, but I’ve had a terrible cut from someone who came to my home. When you go to their setup, it’s like a mini salon with basins, dryers, all equipment. You don’t have that at your own place.

Thanks SmallfishTony, I’ll be in touch. That’s very helpful of you.

As an Amaroo resident my family has found the reliable services of a nearby home based hairdresser whom I can recommend. Rather than posting their details here, i would happily pass on details to them via email if you send your details to tony_ozanne@yahoo.com

Remember to check that they have their Public Health Risk Activity Licence. Its illegal for them to be selling hairdressing services without it. If they don’t they probably don’t have have public liability insurance for if anything terrible happened to you. Dodgy business practicises usually go hand in hand with dodgy hairdressing services!!

sounds like a tax investigator ….

anyway as previously mentioned – they generally only take on personal referrals.

Why not give your money to someone who is actively looking for new customers, there are plenty of good hairdressers in the gungahlin area. Alternatively to answer the privacy etc concerns you could have a mobile hairdresser come to you.

There might be a few who build their business based on referrals, but you’d come across them that way, and not out of the yellow pages.. I can think of two I know personally.. but I don’t know you, so I’m not inclined to give out their home address over the internet..

Mel (previously worked at Cataldos, and Urban Hair in Yarralumla), now works at Modern Classic in the city. Does a really good “bob”. Can work magic with people’s hair. Never been unhappy!

Wayne at Fringe in Mort St Braddon is great. About $130 for shampoo, cut and blow dry, not sure how much extra for colour.

scattieboots8:16 pm 26 Jul 12

I just went to Axis in the st george building marcus clarke street civic. I got a full head of foils, cut, treatment, blowdry and straightened. It was $260 but the treatment was optional, great consultation fantastic service and great results. higly reccomend

I got one of those groupon vouchers for Antique Salon and went yesterday. They did a FANTASTIC job! It’s an Aveda salon so the products are wonderful. The salon is beautiful and relaxing. You sit back with your glass of sparkling wine and just enjoy the pampering. The cut was the best that I’ve had in years. I asked how much it would be for foils and a hair cut. Since I only get about 10 foils, they said it would be $110 total. That’s a terrific bargain for a superlative haircut and generally luxurious hour.

HeighwayQueen2:14 pm 28 Jun 12

Kayla at Hairhouse Warehouse at Belconnen Mall is pretty good. They often have a special of 10 foils, cut, treatment and blowdry for $99. When the specials not on it’s around $140.
Since then though I’ve been to CIT Reid to the haridressing school and it was very cheap. I got half head of foils, treatment and a cut for $55.
The downside to CIT is that it’s the students doing the work and they need to get the teacher to constantly check their work which can take a while. I was happy with it though and will go back.

The BEST hair cut I ever had was done by Mark at Just Cuts in Belconnen. I wanted a complete style change so I took in a photo and Mark cut it perfectly and made sure it would suit my hair and face. I don’t have loads of money to spend on myself so took a chance at Just Cuts and I can tell you I was absolutely thrilled with his work. He took so much time and care and still only charged me $25.00. A legend.

+1 for impoverished student’s “fabulous hairdresser on London Circuit (cnr Constitution Ave) in that building directly on the corner”. I had a great cut today from Sheryn at Hair In The City for $75 (wash, cut, dry, no colour). A friend recommends Amina from same place.

I go to Florey Hair Design at the Florey Shops – Went to CJ’s by mistake once and Never again – Florey Hair design all the girls are down to earth (no odd cuts on them), and I have lots of hair get 3/4head of foils, cut, and style for less than $200, TJ and Nicky the owners are lovely young ladies – Tell them Sal sent you!

Again, not in Civic, but try Hair Affair in Mawson. John and his team are fantastic. They really listen to their clients. Half head of foils, wash, cut and blow dry = $149. Clientel comprises young men and women to older men and women. Best salon in ACT IMO

I have been going to Define Hair Design in Hughes for about 8 years now and love it, excellent pricing and really lovely people, they are good for a laugh and happy to come up with new ideas. I always walk away with change from $200 and dye my nearly black hair platinum blonde and spend 3 hours waiting, Mel is the owner and fantastic at her job. I would give them a call! 02 6281 2188!

CanberraBred2:48 pm 27 Jun 12

Claire at Bold Hair in Scullin shops is great and charges are just over $100 for cut, colour, style. She knows a lot about different hair types and will definitely give you good advice about fixing bad colour jobs. Not sure if she takes new clients, though…

Blaq hair and beauty in Forde. I too have found Sibu expensive and a bit rude – also I dont mind someone different washing my hair but like to have one person cut colour and style, which Sibu dont do.

Cassie at Blaq is great and very friendly and the prices are advertised here:

La Bimbi in New Acton is very good. They’ll do a half head of foils, toner and style (with cut and blow dry) for around $210-$220. ( I realise this is a little more than you mentioned but they do a quality job and are well worth the little bit extra)

La Bimbi is brilliant but you will pay up around $300 for a hair cut and colour, it is definitely the best experience i have had at a hair dresser though. I rate Tg’s in Civic, I have long hair and always go a cut and colour and pay around $200 each time. I’ve heard Melba shops have a pretty good hair dresser too but cant speak from experience.

Totally agree…Haven’t been to the hairdresser at Melba shops, but Steve’s does a great pizza and sensational chips!

I have some clippers at home that I use to cut my hair and my wife has a blow drier. I haven’t put a colour in hair before but I’m willing to give it a go. (how hard can it be)
I’ll do the lot for $100.00
Give me a call.

Im even off to see them tomorrow for a complete overhaul.

Thanks! Lots of ideas there, appreciate that a consultation sounds luvvyish but it was to advise on rescuing my hair from the poor Sibu colouring job. Rhubarb in Lyneham could be worth a go as I wanted a dip dye style. All the ones I have tried were from recommendations which is a shame when you have admired a friends style and it goes pear shaped for you!

I too had several stupidly expensive hair cuts in Canberra and came out looking ridiculous. At one point I was flying interstate to see friends on a reasonably regular basis and so would get my hair cut there!! I eventually found a fabulous hairdresser on London Circuit (cnr Constitution Ave) in that building directly on the corner. Believe it or not though, the best haircut I had was my final one: I was travelling for four months so I thought “sod it” and went to Just Cuts in Woden. Brilliant job and a quarter of the price!!

Supercuts in Civic. Fantastic job and great service. Just make sure they don’t give you the cranky old boiler who thinks she’s the best thing since sliced bread – I had her once and she did a shit job and complained the whole time anyway.

Gosh Hair at Dickson is brilliant. It’s a home-based business run by a couple – Raff and Marg. Raff is the one I see. He does beautiful hair. First heard of via word of mouth – at least 4 of my friends go to the same place.

I always walk out feeling on top of the world. His cut holds shape for ages – it’s so good it even looks fantastic if I let it dry on its own & add no hair products. The colour is perfect. Raff really listens to what I’m after but has great ideas of his own too.

Probably around $200 mark but can’t remember if a bit more or less – sorry. Worth checking!

serendipity942:30 pm 26 Jun 12

THE Hairdressing in Civic under James Court Apartments is great. You pay just over $200 for the most senior hairdresser (the owner, Darren, who is fabulous) so maybe they have lower costs for other stylists. I’ve done most ‘good’ salons in Canberra and rate this one. Worth the extra money to have hair that feels and looks good and a cut that go for two months if you need it to.

Can always pop in for a consult. My first chat took 10 minutes just to talk about what I wanted and for them to explain the options they would recommend.

Apart from that, it can be good to ask workmates etc where they go if you like their hair and get a personal rec. I always find it better to get referred to a specific hairdresser than just a salon, too random that way.

axis, on barry drive, is da bomb.

but have also heard good things about the awfully named rhubarb and me in lyneham…

gourmetmumma2:25 pm 26 Jun 12

I posted the same question on here over a year ago and someone put me on to a mum & daughter team who work from their converted garage at home. They are at Ngunnawal and they are fantastic…both lovely, very professional and very particular. I was hesitant at first as I’d never been to someone’s home before but I now go every 6-8 weeks and have never looked back. Their business name is Inspirations hair and their number is 0401 647 709. Because they don’t have to pay rent and extra overheads that a store pays, their prices are reasonable…I have shoulder length hair and get a semi colour plus half head foils plus cut and have never paid over $85. The daughter is overseas at the moment for a month but you should still get an appointment…normally make sure you book ahead they are busy girls.

TheDancingDjinn2:20 pm 26 Jun 12

TG’s in civic is the best – Breanna is my hairdresser but Shane is wonderful, and so are all the others – great people great hair.

Giorgio’s Hair & Beauty in Kippax charged me $90 for JUST a wash and blow dry. Never again.

What a rip off!!

I used to go to ‘Seven’ in Braddon.

The hairdresser I had was really nice and always did an awesome cut. The only reason I stopped going was because, given the shortness of my hair I was finding myself going somewhat regularly .. every 4 – 6 weeks.

At first the price was somewhat reasonable for an inner-city salon, though a bit on the pricey side. Then one day, after my 6 week absence I went to get my hair cut again (no colour, just a short cut style that I have done all the time) and when I went to pay, the price had literally jumped $20 .. making the whole thing more than $100 for a simple style cut with no colour .. I never went back. Friendly, great hairdressers are one thing but paying through the nose, and regularly is another.

I now go to Ainslie, the girls are nice and they’re way cheaper.

Harlequinade11:08 am 14 Nov 11

Rachel who owns “The Strand” at weetangara shops is really good too. She loves her job and has a lot of pride in her work so you can guarantee that you will leave happy..she is also one of the cheaper hairdressers around.
Only bad thing is sometimes it can be hard to get an appointment with her because its only her that works there.

oh oh oh and the shampoo/conditioners she keeps in stock are awesome! cant remember the brand but its some weirdo vegan stuff, its very good. I have really fine curly hair and it can be hard to manage but since ive been using the vegan stuff it has been way healthier.

Hi, does anyone know the Fringe website? As i tried to google it but it couldn’t find it. Thank you

Okay, so thank you to everyone who recommended Elvira at Axis Hair. She was wonderful.

Genie, your experience at Epic sounds even worse than mine! You asked why I kept going back to Cataldos? The bottomline is that they gave a killer head massage. And in the beginning I was happy to pay $200 for that. But after a while, you kinda think is a trim the best I can expect for this sort of money? So I tried a different stylist at the same salon. My regular got pissed off and showed it – so I left.

Sorry about your jeans. That really sucks!

I went there ‘for years’ until just recently, not ‘years ago’.

SophieMarie said :

Adam is near impossible to get into this time of year with it being ‘wedding season’ I’ve got an appointment in January that I’ve held since my last visit in September. I booked the earliest date possible.

Sophie what I don’t understand is why you would keep going back to a hairdresser if you were unhappy ? Unless your a brunette getting your hair dyed blonde, there isn’t really a reason to be at the hair dresser every 6 weeks either.

I’ve been to Epic at Woden ONCE, and once only.. I can’t complain about my hair cut or the colour. But the service was shocking. I think I was there for almost 3 1/2 hours.. After the colour was done I think I had to wait about 45minutes for my cut. Just wasn’t on… The worse part of my visit was the hairdresser dropping hair dye on a brand new pair of jeans I was wearing… I now had a collection of 3 white spots near my ankle, made worse when the hairdresser tried to wash it off….. Each spot was about the size of a 5cent coin. When I mentioned it to the grumpy old lady at the counter when I paid (who told me she was the owner).. No discount nothing ! Not even an apology. YES I fully expected some form of a discount, after all they had damaged a $150 pair a jeans.

What do Canberrans consider to be a reasonable price for a women’s haircut? I’m from a small town and am used to being able to pay less than $80 for a cut, half head of foils and a good head massage. What’s considered to be a normal price for a cut – nothing fancy, just a trim and thin?

Confess I’m a little shocked that complaining about being roughed up when being shampooed and conditioned amounts to being “precious”. My only standard going into a hairdresser is that I should look better leaving than when I went in. Not too hard when I look like a wookie most of the time. Now I have amended that standard to include not feeling like a piece of meat. Again, I would struggle to classify this as being a diva. I confess I was desperately disappointed because my previous experiences at this specific salon were excellent. The thing is – that’s what makes it so bad in my mind and trust lost is very difficult to regain.

She was pulling me and my hair. I had shampoo and conditioner in my eyes the entire time. I asked her to add some cold water because she was scalding me – and she did. But the roughness continued. What would you have me do? Walk away with product and conditioner in my hair. Easier said than done. But you are right, you should say something while they are doing it. But the upshot is even if I had and she stopped, I could never go back. It’s a cultural thing that makes staff behave badly and think they can get away with it. I am totally shocked to hear about your experience at Shi. I went there for years until I moved to Brisbane (and I will be going back when I move back to Canberra). Boyd and Sarah are the most awesome hairdressers I have ever been to. For me, each and every experience at Shi has been nothing but perfect and I have felt pampered every time. I have a suspicion you may be a little precious to even consider complaining about the service Shi provides.

Because your idea of customer service is 100% correct and therefore people are “precious” about being roughed up by a hairdresser? seriously? She could have had a shitty trainee doing her shampoo and the kid might have not been a great person to have wash hair, but to call a person precious because they experianced something differant to you at a hairdresser you went to years ago, is a bit much.

TG’s in Civic is Great – Alicia or Sarah are the ones to ask for.
Wonderful women, wonderful hair.
And i am someone who fears the hairdresser – i turst these people, they are very good.

Sophie, why would you continue to go to a hairdresser every six weeks for a whole year when they weren’t doing the haircut you wanted? If they don’t get it right the first time you might go back once more for them to fix it. Maybe. But then to keep going back for a year? That’s insane.

And why would you let the hairdresser forget about you for an hour with colour in your hair? If it was on any longer than twenty or thirty minutes without them checking on it then you should have said something.

And if someone is washing your hair too roughly then bloody tell them to stop! Don’t just sit there and let them do it then complain afterwards.

I understand that you put your trust in a hairdresser to do a good job, after all they’re the one with the hairdresser training. But you still need to voice your opinions, concerns and dissapprovals as they arise, not at the end when the damage is done.

Haha, straight to the top of the class for you!

Sounds like Axis is the one to beat! Looked up their webpage. No mention of anyone called Elvira. Tried to contact Adam. He can see me in January! Meanwhile, I’m walking around looking like a wookie. What to do? See that people have recommended Fringe. Checked out their webpage. Kind of looks a little too funky for my taste. Any other recommendations? Cataldo’s is out for me. Went there for a year. Asked for layers. Got a trim – with no layers. Even bought in a picture of a hairstyle I wanted. Got a trim. Paid in excess of $200 for a trim and a colour. Still looked nothing like the haircut I showed them. Try doing that every six weeks (which is the time they recommend for doing it all again). Epic hair in Woden. In excess of $200 for cut and colour. And they left in half the colour and let it process for an hour. Imagine the condition of my hair after that? Did Shi Hair for a while. Until one of their girls roughed me up during a shampoo and condition. They apologised because I was still shaken up after an hour. But you can never go back after that. Desperate. Sophie.

I have to say after 5 yrs in Canberra I have finally found THE best male haidresser for women….Adam @ Axis Hair!!

Not only were the staff polite and genuine the salon was lovley and not a factory like Cataldos and many others.

Adam listened to what I wanted and didn’t want; he has real talent and understands what looks best on what face shape to make you look beautiful!! : ))
He’s also a little cheeky so watch out ; )

Lexi did my colour and it was devine – another talented gal and she gives the best head massges when washing your hair!! : )

Overall Axia made me feel like ‘family’ and I felt completely comfortable with my hair in their hands – afterall that is what I am paying for; upt to date skills and great talent !!!

Why does it have to be a male hairdresser? Surely ability is the important issue here?

The specific request for a male certainly makes more sense in this context.

What is the point of this question? If you are after a good haircut why do you specifically need a man? Are you a lesbian whose partner gets jealous of other women touching her hair? Are you a heterosexual hair fetishist looking for a bit on the side? Please tell me because I am plagued by curiosity.

Boyd @ Shi in Kingston, Marco @ Woden (not sure of salon name, but he’s ex Shi)

Or when you were asking for a ‘male hairdresser for women’ was that code for ‘male hairdresser’ in the, ahem, ‘Don’t Mess with the Zohan’ sense?? (Otherwise why restrict your search to one gender?)

Check out Salon Altenburg at the Hyperdome (well it’s between Hyper-D and the Library) you can book online at http://www.salonaltenburg.com – great for people like me who are all, ‘Hmmm, I don’t know what haircut I want…’ I am SO bad with names, but a nice, young, Yankie bloke helped me so I thought I’d let you all know.

I definitely second this recommendation. Matt at salon altenburg is fantastic, and the prices are so reasonable.

+1 for Elvira and Axis in general. Never had a bad haircut from them either, which is tricky when you’re a woman with short hair. There’s a fine line between cutting edge, cute, butch and betty housewife.

+1 [or whatever no. we’re up to for axis, with elvira getting a few nods, too] great haircuts, good coffee (get gianni to make it for you!) and their own products are brilliant. why go elsewhere? [although, the awfully-named ‘rhubarb and me’ in lyneham shops are good, too, astress and astromonkey rekkun]

When I lived on the north side I went to Franco in Bailey Arcade for many years. On the south side now and Jacinta at Rustics salon in Yarralumla was recommended. She’s great and goes to a lot of trouble to tame my thick, wavy hair. She’s a whizz with the straightener. Jaquie is good cutter too. Usually $80 plus.

Mirror Image Hair Design at the Pearce shops are probably the best I’ve found, although don’t go unless you have a spare hour or three. I also like Q Hair at Ainslie.

I go Lisa’s Hair Studio in Calwell… never had a bad haircut from their and I am really fussy 😀 Ask for Jess.

Cheapest ??

Hasn’t been going to a hairdresser after one in O’Connor Shop closed down…

Mel at Define Hair Design in Hughes, much cheaper than anywhere in the inner north, small salon, owner operator and brilliant cut/colour, my friend who has extreme curls gets brilliant cuts there, and they colour mine from almost black to blonde beautifully!!

Axis Hairdressing – Nuff said

Adam and Gianni are brilliant ! 🙂

I recommend Rebecca at Ora Hair, Woden (next the accountant on the square)

Kiera at Cataldo’s in Civic. I’ve been with her for a few years now and always get complemented on my cuts. Especially if you want a bob or shorter cut – she’s the best!

+1 for Wayne at Fringe

He really knows how to cut hair well and listens to you and takes into account what you want. He also trains his staff well so I think you’d be well placed with anyone there. Wayne can be pretty hard to get an appointment with (and he’s on leave for the next few weeks).

Another +1 for Wayne at Fringe. I have curly hair and not everyone can cut it well. Wayne certainly takes the time to talk to you about what you do with your hair day to day and how you want it. Never had a bad cut from him!

Anton’s in Garema Place. They do a good job and their prices are pretty good, too.

After going to many different hairdressers across Canberra, I now go to Janice at Off London.

The worst ones I’ve been to are Fuse (extremely rude and arrogant staff), and Epic. Epic literally makes up prices on the spot – once you’ve already had it done. They don’t seem to actually have a set price list, and the price they try to charge you is always different to what you were quoted. I’m pretty sure there’s a big thread on the Vogue forums where people are talking about it.

Shi in Kingston. Ask for Tim or Boyd

And you get to play with a complimentary iPad over beer or coffee while you wait/have your hair cut.

+1 for Elvira. I have had two different syles from her recently and both have been great. After almost 4 years of changing hair dressers i think I am going to stay with this one 🙂

Mrs Swaggie and the Swagettes all swear by Studio Altenberg in Tuggeranong, I still can’t work out why women get charged three times as much as guys do for a basic Hair Cut but what do I know – i just pay the guy.

+1 for Fringe.

Wayne is awesome, although these days I go to one of the more junior stylists, Fee. But I would recommend most of the stylists there. 😀

Axis hairdressers are the best. Ask for Elvira. Never had a bad haircut from them, and I’ve had haircuts from a few different hairdressers there.

I go to Wayne Robinson at Fringe in Braddon. He talks before cutting, and will tailor your haircut depending on whether you blow-dry, use a straight iron, or use/don’t use product. I’ve been going there for six years and I recommend him wholeheartedly.

You can also try Absolute Hair in Queanbeyan is that’s not far of a drive.

I had my last hair cut on the night of my birthday in April, mrs wishuwell had been nagging and I’d been refusing for months. So in front of my friends she announced that she had arranged something special for my birthday as she handcuffed me to a chair. Cue music, onto the back deck struts a tall blond in heels and ankle length leather coat (yippie stripper/lap dancer). Off comes the coat (no sexy clothes underneath), out comes the scissors, snip goes the hair. Outmanouvered again by clever wifey.

+2. Maddie and her staff are all great. As a consumer (not a hairdresser by any means – I can barely shave properly with an electric razor), I’d have to agree with hairdresser28. Salons are places where people have to make a living. A good hairdresser is like a good mechanic. Once you’ve found one, you keep them, and part of that is the balance between what you pay and what you get in terms of the quality of service.

Some people don’t care as much as others about their haircuts. We’re not all fashionistas, at least not anymore. Maybe this discussion should make a distinction between cheap and cheerful on the one hand, and stylists on the other, so those of you who think you ought to be able to get a haircut for less than $25 can talk to each other and leave the rest of us alone.

Well I like my hair done by a good hair stylist, and you need not pay big dollars, sometimes if I’m in Sydney I go to a Chinese lady (Lilly) opposite central railway station, who only charges $15.00 for shoulder length hair cuts, or Q hair in Ainslie, I like Molly to do my hair at Q,as she is a great hair stylist, but to get a cheap colour (Streaks) CIT Reid, they do a good job, if you can’t get in there I recommend Capital hairdressing Academy, and have qualified hairdressers there also at cheaper rates, you would be the guinea pig for students under supervision, I have never had a problem with them.

hairdresser289:56 pm 19 Aug 10

can i just comment on alot of the posts above and say that as a hairdresser i am deeply offended and seriously over people being so tight about hair. yes im sure once upon a time haircuts nd colors were alot cheaper, but so was just about everything. when you get a hair cut or color or any service in a salon youm are paying to sit in that chair. you are paying to use the service of a persons skills who has taken four years of training and for the costs of the business eg. rent, electricity, products and wages. if you are paying over 70 $ for a haircut its generally because the salon you are visiting is one which has highly qualified staff, is popular, does a good job or is in a shoping center. if this price offends you DONT GO THERE. if you can not ‘justify’ paying good money for a good service, GO TO JUST CUTS and get over it when you get a bad cut because 70 + is what a good cut costs.
again if the price offends, fine. but please do not offend myself ( a hairdresser) or anyone else by undervaluing the work that we work hard to do well. hairdressing is not charity work, and alot of people need to accept that the prices ARE actually justifyable to make any sort of profit from our industry. if you cant justify spend X amount- dont, good but dont disrespect me or other people in the industry by saying that its a rip off, because just cuts is just around the corner.

Hi there, if you are looking for a good hairdresser in Tuggeranong try Gowrie hair and Beauty at the Gowrie shops. New owners, new look and I know they have a colouring competition for the kids while they wait. They have a baby seat too. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions – I’ll start the ring around on Tuesday when I expect they would all be open again.

In the meantime, any more recommendations?

Tell her I said Hi 🙂

I used to work for Heinze at Vanity Fayre. He was a pr!ck to work for but a very good hairdresser.

Just shave their head or salad bowl and scissors.

John Brennan, upstairs in the Canberra Centre, has been excellent for my kids (4 & 7) – their weekend staff anyway (I havent gone during the week). Not too pricey, although there is a 10% surcharge on Sundays. I (male) have had my hair cut at the same time and had no complaints, although I am hardly a glamour, and a past it male, so I don’t really notice the difference between good and bad.

The Cut Company (?) at Erindale.

We used to frequent one of the more expensive City salons – 2 adults, 2 kids would leave little change from $400 (yes you’re reading correctly). We found Anne Marie a couple of months ago and haven’t looked back.

Okay Gretal; for wonderful hair, in our lovely Northern suburbs, give Angie a call on 0402 020 863. She is really excellent, but she does likes to ‘hook in’, so if you want a very minor trim, be emphatic about exactly how much you want taken off.

In the past few months I have also discovered Sam, who is more centrally located (Barton), willing to come to your home, slightly less expensive and an excellent cutter and colourist. I would certainly place her on par with Angie, but Sam is that little bit more conveniently located to my work. I have received a lot of hair compliments in the past few months (which is always the sign of a good stylist).

Sam’s number is 0423 279 620; she works out of her home salon in Barton. I am sure that you’ll be delighted with either of these stylists … I am extremely fussy about hair (and in fact, was once a hair model in Melbourne, so I do know good hair!)

Let me know how you go!

Pigsfly,

Do yourself (and your kids) a favour and give Samantha a call on 0423 279 620. She is one of the best cutters and colourists in Canberra (and I am the fussiest of fussy hair people), charges about half of what the salons do, and she is great with kids of all ages. Best of all, if you ask very nicely, she’ll come to you at your home, or she can book you into her lovely home salon (Barton, which is central to all sides of Canberra). I am sure that you’ll be delighted.

Let me know how you go!

Uno hair dressers in Holt. Fantastic. Sharyn is a brilliant hairdresser!! Wont bust the budget either.

Would also like to know which mobile hairdresser Deezagood goes to in Belconnen

grunge_hippy9:30 am 30 Mar 10

I live in tuggeranong, but I make the trip every 8 weeks to arpege hair in gungahlin because Vicki (the owner) cuts my hair and my 4 year olds very well. better than anyone I have had on the the southside. but you need to book (she keeps her appointments!)

I go to Cataldo’s in the City although there is one at Woden as well. No chance of short notice appointments but all their staff are excellent and I have seen kids in there. Bit pricey though.

My husband insists on frequenting our local hairdresser at Calwell (Lisa’s I think). If you want a haircut with any thought put into it then in my opinion this is the place to avoid. Cheap though.

My daughter works at Vanity Fayre in Manuka and they are very family friendly but also very good. They are on Bouganville Street just near the pedestrian crossing

Tell her I said Hi 🙂

Paul at Woden Tradies is the cheapest and the best. But you have to book, he’s always flat out. He does men’s as well as women’s cuts.

armageddonpc9:39 am 12 Feb 10

Thanks everyone (except WillowJim) for your help. I took my son to Cataldos at Woden and they charged $110.00 for a cut and some colour!! Cancelled my booking straight away.

In my quest to find Canberra’s best hairdresser when I moved here a few years ago, I can comment on a number of fellows mentioned in the posts above. Boyd at Shi does a brilliant cutting job, that I wasn’t overly impressed by the girl who coloured my hair. They are also extremely expensive. Adam as Axis does a fantastic job of cutting and colouring hair too – but again, I find $240.00-$260.00 for a cut/colour every six – eight weeks too pricey. Vince at Salon Saraci (Lanyon shops) is more reasonably priced, and just as talented as the more expensive salons – I strongly recommend him. Unfortunately his Tuggers location means that he is branded a ‘suburban hairdresser’, but he could easily be working in one of the more prestigious salons around town. I now go to a hairdresser in Belconnen (even though I live southside), who is brilliant at both cutting and colouring, and charges about half of what the big salons charge (she operates from home) – but she is a woman, and you wanted to see a guy?? If you want her details, let me know.

I’d love to know who this is… must be good if you are willing to travel from Southside to Belconnen for a hair appointment. Am so over all these hairdressers charging a packet for mediocre cuts.

Adam from Axis is an amazing hairdresser. He does a terrific cut each time and the cut holds its style. I have been to heaps of hairdressers and none were as good as Adam. Adam listens to you and gives you the cut that you ask for every time.

Dont be sceptical, these boys can cut hair!!

I have had both Gianni and Adam Cut my hair at various times, Adam is definitely the more creative, who seems to do more up to date styles. Maybe the Master has been passed by the Apprentice. Adam is very well respected as being one of the leading hairdressers in Canberra. A lot of my friends and colleagues see Adam and speak highly of his work, i think its about $80 for shampoo cut and dry. And he is pretty flexible too he squeezes me in all the time!!!

Paul at the Tradies in Woden +1. Me or the wife won’t go anywhere else. However, he’s always got a full appointment book – you might have to wait a while.

try vince at salon saraci(not sure if that spelling is right) my family has been going to him for years. im pretty sure he came 3rd is some world championship hairdressing thing.
the salon is located near australia post at lanyon market place

Try Paul at the Tradies in Woden. He and his brother Joe ( from the Tradies at Dickson) used to own a salon in Warramanga. They are both amazing male hairdressers for women. I have been going to Joe/Paul for the last 13 years.

Havent been there in a few years but the little hairdresser where Aldi is in Tuggers used to be good… cheap to.

Otherwise venture from the Southside and see Adam at Axis in the City.

no-one, they’re all northside – sorry, but that’s life… 😉

…you go see Boyd at Shi Hair in Kingston…

Fisher Shops has an old fashioned hair dressers if it is still there. It is a one-woman show as well but is only open during the week from memory.

My wife thinks I am anal because I have had the same hairdresser for 25 years, and she is the only person who has cut my hair in that time. I have followed her through 4 salons in that time.

She has her own salon now, works as a 1 person operation, and most of her clientelle are mature age ladies (and a few gents like me). She is in my opinion the best hairdresser in Canberra, but you need to check that out for yourself. You have to book a good week in advance to get in, but it is worth the wait. Just call her and have a chat first.

Where are Flynn shops? Are they the ones that have Tillyard Drive Medical Practice there now? If so, there is no hair salon there any more.

My mum, 76yo, goes to Bentleys in Jamison. She has a wash and curl done each week. They don’t try and talk her into anything she doesn’t want and she always looks decent.

Bentley’s at Jamison doa lot of work for the near by older person’s facility.

They’d be able to do a proper set.

Try the hairdresser at Lyneham Shops. I’m sure lots of senior citizens go there.

What about the hairdressers that go to the local nursing homes? They’d be well versed in the art of the ‘do!!

Try your luck in a nearby town like Bungendore, Yass or Cooma. I have nothing more to offe than a hunch but you never know, you may also enjoy a venture away from the ‘big smoke’ too. I’d ring ahead though, how’s the price of feul at the moment eh?

They have some young apprentices but the two leading hairdressers (one who is owner) are the ladies to get. I might be self-shaming myself but it was also one of the only places I was able to get a perm a few years ago (and yes, it did turn out in lovely 80’s splendour) which is also testament to it being a bit of a nana salon???

I really struggled to find a hairdresser that does a decent mens cut, ended up going to a one-woman shop in Kingston. She does mostly women’s cuts/colours/styles as far as I can tell from the clientele. Closed all January though, so be quick!

I have been a loyal customer of Cataldo’s hair salon in Civic for 6 years. I really don’t know why… I suppose there is some prestige associated with this place.
I asked for layers- They give me a trim
I ask for something funky- They give me a trim
I show them a photo of a hairstyle that I like- they give me a trim
I explain that I am bored with my current style and would like a complete overhaul- they give me a trim.
I’ve had enough of paying $79 to see an associate hairdresser to get a trim when I could go to Just Cuts for the same deal.

I have also regularly been passed off to a junior stylist to finish a cut, but still been charged for the associate.

like s-s-a reitrerates, once you find someone, s’like a gp – don’t let them go anywhere. jo at next years ago was right brilliant then headed off to london. now i have gianni at axis, on barry drive near marcus clarke, and can’t recommend him highly enough.

hopefully by now, though, our intrepid op has had the mullet trimmed to a more streamlined fish and it has had time to grow back in spite of the new boss’s snarls! who did you go with, i-filed??

Like so many things in life – you get what you pay for. Go see the lovely Boyd at Shi Hair in Kingston. Best cutter/stylist ever!! Sarah does a great job with the foils. And the rest of the gang do a fabulous job of making me feel special 🙂

The message I’m getting here is find someone you’re comfortable with and stick with them

Yes. Which is why I nearly cried when I lost Jason for the best part of a year. I found him again, he’s now owner of Kundalini at the Hotel Realm. Exe but worth it IMO.

Sherynne at Hair in the City is good. USed to go to Gianni at Axis but it eventually got too expensive. Hair in the City is just as good and more affordable by far

The Edge at O’Connor has restored my locks to something I feel proud leaving the house with so I will be going there from now on.

I love my local Bold Hair in scullin Claire has cut my very unruly thick curly locks for 5 or 6 years now and it’s never looked better, She is pretty good with pricing too, Discounts for pensioners.

For what it’s worth, I concur that EPIC at Woden is a rip-off.

I can highly recommend Cosmo in Dickson. Opposite the motor registry. All the ‘extras’ are available (treatment, blow-dry, smelly stuff) but they always ask first, tell you the price and take ‘no’ for an answer. Best of all, they listen to what you want done and print out a quote so you know exactly what you’re in for.

I hate hairdresser chitchat and they politely leave me alone, the atmosphere is sunny and warm, and they respect that not everyone wants a modish cut.

I’m always suss of the salons that ply you with alcohol. I suspect their intent is twofold – to make your care less when your hair looks awful and so you’re not quite as offended when they give you the bill.

That would have to be a lot of booze misspris! I dare say a glass of wine would have little effect on both fronts. I quite enjoy the espresso or a glass of wine I receive at Axis, particularly if I’m waiting while one of my kids is getting a haircut. I think it’s a nice aspect to their business model.

Sigh – if you have long curly hair you could get yours cut anywhere. Try fine straight hair and a cowlick … that’s what tests a hairdresser! 🙂

YES I could just go anywhere with my long curly hair that is also thick, wild, fizzy and dry, if I wanted to look like at an overgrown sheep or someone who just stuck her finger in a power point.

Sorry you have fine straight hair with a cowlick but please don’t knock something you know nothing about.

APs at Narrabundah Shops get my half deserted head

I guess ill be going back to my mates house for haircuts, down the road, and 10 bucks for a haircut beer and yarn… Good deal if you ask me.

“Johnny” who worked at Ngunnawal Hair Salon was a great hairdresser. I had the compliment of him giving me my best haircut ever as voted by Mrs Danman, so he has had my last 18 months of haircuts.

Unfortunately my last haircut from him there will probably be my last, because he was telling me he is going to work at his friends babrer shop opening somewhere in Tuggeranong. He was telling me it will be called MOE, for Mens Only Environment.

They will have beers, huge flat screens, traditional barber shop services like shaving and beard trimming and regular hair salon treatments and cuts. Best of all, its a mens only environment. I am guessing that includes staff.

I can not remember where he said it was opening, but when I spoke to him last (About 3 weeks ago) he said the salon was built, and that his friend was just waiting on some red tape. He expected to be there working within the week.

If anyone goes there or hears of its whereabouts, post a review.

Tuggeranong is a little far for me to go for a haircut without any prior feedback 🙂

I used to go to LaBimbi in belconnen. They weren’t cheap – but did a reasonable job and use natural products. You also get a mini massage before they start.

I do my own..just so, if i have a dodgy haircut, it’s my own fault. 😀

Clown Killer12:58 am 12 May 09

The message I’m getting here is find someone you’re comfortable with and stick with them – the longer an individual is cutting your hair the better the cut as they figure out over time what works and what dosn’t. Not that much of a help really, but I suspect it’s true.

There’s no doubt the place is a wank, but I enjoy their company and they pretend to enjoy mine. YMMV.

The OP said “Bad timing, as I had job interviews coming up. It’s hard to face a smart recruitment panel with a mullet.”

I’m sorry, I know I shall go to hell, but I guffawed out loud! The mental image, the obvious despair…

I always found haircuts an absolute gamble, dependant on the individual hairdresser, and most were pretty ordinary. I’ve just hacked away at my own head for the last few years (when I last had a haircut, they cost 50 bucks at trendy salons) and get a result I like better.

And I don’t get a head full of smelly stuff that makes my head itch and attracts bees.

Liz and Keira at Cataldos. And I don’t reckon it costs that much, you get what you pay for. In my opinion 🙂

Cataldos do a good haircut, but they fuss around for hours, and it costs the earth.

Ditto for Antons – although the 60s decor is so cute it is almost worth it.

You may as well have asked how many Canberra hairdressing salons/barbers there are in the yellow pages, 300 odd.. and times that by 5+ hairdressers per salon then you’ve got a great lottery.

I go to my hairdresser, the price is about the same as everywhere else.. anyway she’s hot.

The Hairdressing for me too. Very happy with it and dont think I have ever had a bad cut.

I miss my local barber from whence I used to live. He was a real barber – trained in cutting hair, not ‘styling’ it. He was excellent too. No fuss, just come in, sit down and wait your turn.

I also recommend the barber at Cook shops, he does an excellent job.

Cataldo’s, Civic (but I hear the Woden one is just as good).

I see a ‘Wilfred’ style ABC comedy in the making… : P

“If you are a male I’d suggest you shave your head altogether with a razor and shaving cream. It is all the rage at the moment and gives you a tough guy look. No more dandruff either.”

I’ve done a razor job a few times, but it has a few downsides compared to razor 0 on the clippers… it takes longer; razor cuts are a bastard; you gotta cut more often (daily) to maintain the look; I find the skin my head on day 0 is too grippy – shirts, pillow cases, hats feel like they stick to my head; the head stubble on day 1 is too much like velcro – again I get stuck on things.

so you are now bald s-s-a ?

My hairdresser is a qualified ex trade hairdresser – he charges me 10 bucks and I always get a beer and a good yarn – haircut is ok too 🙂

On the subject of good hairdressers – if anyone knows where JASON from NEXT is now I would be very grateful to find out. My hair is lost without him – boo hoo!

Any good female hairdressers in Belco? I’ve been going to hair spectrum at the mall for years, but I haven’t liked the last couple of cuts. – Nemo, like Thumper says, check out the all girl hairdresser shop at the back end of Kippax mall, and theres another one up in Holt shops that may interest you.

Fair warning though, if its your eye you are interested in pleasing, there’s not much candy in the shop.

Martios in Civic, next to King Omaleys. Excellent service, great cuts and great prices. Used them for years. When my hair went kind of bad a year ago (some weird out of the blue scalp and dry hair thing), they put me onto some American Crew shampoo and after months of flake scalp and dry broken hair, using the new shampoo cleared it in a week!

I used to pay a fortune for my haircuts, and they were never any good. So I got some scissors from hair attack, and now people sidle up and ask where I get my hair cut.

doing your own just involves having a vacuum cleaner close by and half an hour.

“there’s someone at the Uni of Canberra a few of my friends go to, I think the good cutter’s name is Lou or something like that”

That would be Leo, used to go to him when I had hair – great haircuts and pretty good prices. He also does body piercing too!

Not that fast, I’m just vain more than anything.

You can tell Just Cuts have done an ‘interesting’ job when they leave your hair dripping wet and hurry you out the door…

Wow Jas your hair grows fast!

Depends what you call reasonable, I go to Axis in the city, it costs just under $50, you get wine/coffee/juice etc but that is not why I go there. They have good service and are always on time, a big thing for a time poor person like myself and the girl that cuts my hair does a great job. I used to go to Off London, same prices, always running 30 mins-1 hour late and not the same service, they are way overbooked to get the $$ in. $50 for a guys haircut may seem like a lot (according to most of my mates) but I think it’s fine, I go every 6 weeks and it’s all good.

For the record, I will never go in to Just Cuts, did that as a kid, they don’t give you a hairdo, they give you a hair don’t.

thats reasonable considering he keeps trying to escape, pisses on the clippers and humps the groomers leg

I do most of that to my hairdresser (see earlier comments) and still pay nothing!

My shih-tzu’s haircut costs $45. But thats reasonable considering he keeps trying to escape, pisses on the clippers and humps the groomers leg.

Gungahlin Al3:47 pm 22 Jan 08

Am I the only one who’s noticed the hairdressing and grooming articles running side-by-side here??

(Sorry – I tried not to post this, but couldn’t help it…)

Skid’s right, the attention doesn’t last. They’ll suck you in with the wines and the ooo’s and the aaah’s and the head massages, then after you keep going back and they think they’ve got you, the extra attention slowly dwindles until your normal hairdresser comes over to just ‘consult’ on your hair but gets the apprentice to do it – and at the same rate of course.

If you are a male I’d suggest you shave your head altogether with a razor and shaving cream. It is all the rage at the moment and gives you a tough guy look. No more dandruff either.

Being offered extras is a gimmick, generally used to cover that you are paying too much.

If businesses suddenly start focussing all their attentions on you, you’re either a marketing test case or they’re trying to widen a revenue stream rather than increase revenue sources.

If people are giving away extras to you as a ‘ valued special customer’, you should be worried that you’re paying too much.

If you want a haircut, pay for a haircut.
If you want wine, buy wine at market rates.
If you want to share wine with a hairdresser, make them pay for their share.

This is a viral marketing article.

Hairdressers that offer you a glass of wine are hiding their inferior qualities.

I could tell you my secret hairdresser, but I’d have to kill you. Beats the pants off waiting over an hour at JustCuts with a bunch of schmucks, and it’s just as cheap!

$38 & $40 for a simple mens style cut “reasonable”? Wow! I must be turning into a Scrooge!

omore on skid’s excellent advice, most good [ie expensive] salons have their apprentices practice on unsuspecting passers by one night a week [‘next’ used to be wed night] and you’ll get something interestign for free – and a glass of wine!

marcothepolopony2:20 pm 22 Jan 08

During term time, the Hairdressing Department at the CIT, Reid Campus is a good, inexpensive way to have a haircut/colour. Ph 62073246 – best day, Wednesday (not during school holidays)

Not half as interesting as posting that you wife does number twos all over you!

We all have our own little fetishes.

Pair of clippers stems from when they were manual – with two seperately operating blades kind of like a pair of scissors

If you want cheap haircuts, go find the local beauty classes and become one of their guinea pigs.

If you want good haircuts, talk to people who you like the hair of and start finding the suburban shopping centres\home salons they work out of.

there’s someone at the Uni of Canberra a few of my friends go to, I think the good cutter’s name is Lou or something like that, about $40.

Holden Caulfield1:52 pm 22 Jan 08

Not half as interesting as posting that you wife does number twos all over you! EEK!

On a side note, isn’t it interesting that I referred to them as a ‘pair of clippers’. How odd.

The current pair of Wahl clippers that cost me about $70 have provided a good couple of years of service now.

The wife cuts my hair. Number two all-over.

Only problem is that I have incredibly thick curly hair, so it tends to trash clippers pretty quickly.

I had one pair (Remington I think) that lasted half a haircut before they refused to go any further. They had ceramic blades that ‘never need sharpening’.

On second thought, that won’t work if you’re not a bloke. I think.

Just Cuts does something like $21 or $23.

Or you could do what I did – get married and get wifey to do the honours. Free, unless you account for the pairs of shoes, outfits, moisturisers, and other things I have no clue about like cotton balls and eyelash curlers.

Get some clippers and go razor 0 like me 🙂
At $50 for an expensive set it works out at less than $1 a week (if you cut your hair weekly). My clippers are now 5 years old so that’s 20c a week to cut my hair.

john brennan hair – numerous locations in canberra, hit the white pages

from memory it’s $38 for a style cut – i’ve never had a bad cut there.

I reckon the BEST Hair salon is got to be ‘HAIR NITESH’ in Belconnen!! Too good! Friendly service, stylish retro-modern set, exceptionally relaxing atmosphere and of course the finest barbers in town!

Book now! Satisfaction Guaranteed! U won’t regret it!

I love Josie who used to work at THE but now works for herself. Wouldn’t let anyone else touch my hair and her prices are better than THE too. Calls herself Mobile Makeover. I think you will find her in the yellow pages.

Q Hair at Ainslie. They are the best salon I’ve ever found. Great cuts, reasonable prices and good colourists. Plus, they’re all really nice people. That’s important when someone is holding an instrument for spraying hot water right near your face.

Shi in Kingston is the way to go

On the pricey side, but you get what you pay for

Gianni Ciaccia – AXIS he is molto fresco (very Cool)

I wish I could cut my own hair… its just long enough to be awkward.

My big birthday is arriving… I’m turning 21. I desperately need a haircut for my party, so does anyone know of anywhere in Woden that specialises in Womens cuts?

martinos hair for men behind king omalleys in civic.

always an excellent haircut.

i was talked into just cuts ONCE. shocking haircut, which i had to get repaired the next weekend at martinos.

25 bucks for a cut is good as well.

disturbingly i noticed a candle and some zen rocks in there last weekend though.

i solved the rip off hair cut problem by doing it myself, pretty easy and not actually as bad as I know you are all thinking!

have to say gianni ciacia is canberra’s best cutter, at his ‘axis’ salon in barry drive. dunno why anyone’d go anywhere else.

must say, it can be devestating when your haircutter leaves you…

Mest in Manuka are great too.

But I second Schmerica’s sentiments – until I moved to Canberra I never realised there could be a 2 week waiting list for the privilege of paying eighty bucks for a haircut.

Ora Hair in Woden: they offer a glass of wine or coffee, the best haircut I have ever had, fantastic prices and great people!

I get my hair cut once every year or two, but I like the Ainslie Hair Inn. Reasonable prices, good cuts.

Cataldo’s. On the expensive side, but definitely not the most expensive in Canberra. They always do a fantastic job on my colour. Mary and Raylene at Woden are lovely.

For a cheap cut though, you can’t beat any of the Just Cuts stores. But you’re definitely getting what you’re paying for (or not paying for :).

Having been ripped off $190(!!!) for a trim and a touch up on my foils at EPIC in Woden the other week, I’m VERY interested in this…

If you don’t want anything too fancy-schmancy, I’ve never had a problem with John Brennan Hair at Belco (the one near Westpac). Something like $35 for a women’s cut.

I get Pat and Guy to cut my hair at Time Hair Gungahlin.

A fair few of the Raiders go there as well so Pat picks up a lot of good gossip.

I also go to The. $90 may seem a lot, but my cuts always grow out well, and I still get compliments twelve weeks later.

Edge at O’connor shops is also very good, Sally is an excellent colourist.

I try not to get my hair cut in Canberra. $80 to cut my hair just isnt juistifiable to me anymore. Ah, the curses of being a female with long hair.

The Hairdressing in the City. They are in that awful downmarket building St James apartments – but don’t let that put you off. Darren is a brilliant hairdresser. And they’re super friendly, no Attitude. Just don’t let them sell you too much product, the cuts are expensive enough already!

strange but the best I have found is Nitesh at belconnen.

adeptacheese12:32 pm 24 Mar 07

the hairdresser down at jamison shops is awful and snobby, I can tell you that much.

I would’ve thought most of the women who visit this site would just get their mullets done at home.
