Ask RiotACT: Best hairdresser in Canberra?

By Rachel Moore 12 December 2016 16

Rachel Moore Canberra Meki Hair

Regardless of if you’re a Lady or a Gent, hair is pretty darn important to most of us! Is it too thin, thick, curly, wavy, balding, fluffy, dry, flaky, breaking, damaged, too long or too short!!!! Ahh! It is exhausting!

Nothing will deflate you quicker, like a toddler who had their balloon popped, then a bad haircut/style! This is a SUPER “Ask RiotACT” post because there are few things we hope you can help us with. Please comment below not only on your favourite Canberra hair salons, but also your favourite hairdresser and why. For example, “Sally from RiotACT hair d’jour was amazing with my dry thin hair. She increased volume and has left me feeling brand new”.

Gents! This includes you too please! We would love to know what barber floats your boat alongside some great tips for beard trims and maybe what actually happens in the chair with a trim and wax?

But please, a shout out to negative nellies, please only post positive comments. If you have a complaint, please raise your concerns directly to the hair salon.

Here are some of our favs, let us know what you think!

*Disclaimer, that is my (article author) hair in the pic. I had been attending Meki Hair Salon for the past two years. Renee, Lauren and Terri have treated me like a goddess! I mean, I adore the iced herbal tea, snacks, conversation, trashy mags and the beautiful décor, but none of it matters as much as the quality of their hairdressing. Two years ago my hair was completely ruined and destroyed, almost 3 quarters of it had fallen out. Lauren in particular nurtured my hair back into the fine giant mop of hair it once was but it was a slow process and the whole team has been lovely and patient.

My mother cuts my hair. She doesn’t charge. She does as well as any hair dresser I have been to.

I haven’t been to a hairdresser in maybe twenty years. Are women still charged more than men to have their hair cut?

Cut It Long!!! I’ve tried alot of hairdressers in the past 20yrs of getting my hair dyed & no one has come close to having skills like Peta. She’d better never retire because I would have to leave Canberra to find a hairdresser who can do what she does. Absolutely a most talented artist with hair & always keeping studied up with all new hair product technology. Definitely Peta at Cut It Long.

Peta from Cut It Long. Her knowledge on hair is extraordinary! She has managed my hair throughout several pregnancies, kept it healthy and looking natural (while hiding my greys)! She ensures her knowledge and training is current of products and moving trends within the industry. She’s amazing! She also keeps my hubby looking fab with men’s cuts and beard trims!

The Gungahlin barber Dylan Limon was amazing when cutting my hair. Highly recommend this gentleman for any style of haircut. From the male before me reviving a fade to my long hair. He tends to all customers needs with incredible precision. Amazing.

Well, we seem to have a lot of really good hairdressers/stylists in Canberra. Aren’t we lucky?
I want to share my stylist in the list. Jenni at Bond Hair Religion in Kingston is outstanding. Not only does she do great things with my double crown & double cowlic & keep it interesting, her salon also does exciting things with my young adult daughter.
Also, she is very environmentally aware, recycling something like 98-99% of everything that goes through her salon, including chemicals. She raises money for survivers of child abuse by going things like walk Kakoda & has this year set up her own charity I think.
As if this were not enough, she has taken out so many professional awards I can’t count, the latest being recieved in Darwin for trainer of the year or something. She’s stunning on all fronts.

One for the guys! I have to give a shout out to my dear friends – Darren Jones, who many will know from The Hairdressing, and Nicolle Keyes, marketing guru for FashFest this year – who have just realised a long-held dream in opening up their new retro-styled barbershop.

Classic, simple cuts, trims and shaves with old-fashioned customer service – and you can have a beer! #winning

Martine from Capital Hair at Parliament House is awesome!

Sammi 8:17 am 13 Dec 16

Peta Jackson at Cut it long in Theodore. She is an anmazing person and the BEST hairdresser I know!

Rachel Ziv 8:10 am 13 Dec 16

The gals at Cooleman Hair in Cooleman Court. Very friendly and always do a great job at a good price.

Peta at Cut It Long is by far Canberras best hairdresser. I’ve been to 5 of the salons on the list above and none compare to Peta. Her knowledge and passion for hair is amazing, I won’t go anywhere else!

No one knows hair like Peta from Cut It Long. She’s so much fun to be around and always make sure you walk out looking and feeling like a rockstar.

Peta at Cut It Long is amazing. I have a tempremental scalp and it has caused much anxiety (and discrimination) in the past. She has made me feel at ease and has helped find products that I dont react to and has given much guidance.
It has taken me a long time to find someone I can trust and isnt just there to do a job. She genuinely cares about the end result

Peta at Cut it Long in Theodore – by far the best in Canberra!

Madam Cholet 9:45 pm 12 Dec 16

Smitten closed and moved to Kingston and is now called something like ‘A brace of Hares’.

My vote goes to Amanda at Simona in Torrens. One of the few I’ve come across who cat cut curly hair. They aren’t open at the weekend or Mondays, but are open late every other day which is miles better than any other hairdresser which gets booked up at the weekends only. They also don’t push products at you.

Lucy Wilson 12:15 pm 12 Dec 16

Danny from Hair by Danny & Jess in Kingston gets my vote.

Naz at TGs Fyshwick is a superstar colourist! Has been fixing my colour gradually after a stuff up at another salon this time last year.
