Ask RiotACT

Hi Rioters.

During the week I read an article which highlighted that the ACT Government is targeting illegal parking in Gungahlin with mobile systems which capture multiple pictures including the licence plate.

What I am interested in understanding is how the ACT Government is intending to tackle the problem of unregistered cars parked illegally. I have written to Minister Rattenbury’s office seeking a response.

In my local suburb of Moncrieff, this problem is becoming a significant concern to local residents, to the point that it is becoming absurd. There is a local automotive business in particular which takes advantage of any vacant spots around the suburb and parks cars being worked on in every street possible, including in surrounding suburbs.

At times I have seen cars with no tyres left up on jacks for days on end.

Surely this problem isn’t isolated to our suburb and I am keen to know who else experiences this problem and how you have dealt with it?

For context, locals from our suburb have reported the cars multiple times and inspectors do come out and place fines and/or defect notices but it doesn’t seem to address the crux of the issue.

Yeah, it’s nothing to do with government’s narrow street planning and decreasing house block sizes in the past 20 years which ignores the fact that Canberrans like to use cars as their primary method of transport.

There are some cul de sacs in Gungahlin that provide no street parking. Let’s not talk about the problems that garbage trucks and other service vehicles have navigating them either.

Totally agree Capital Retro. It’s kind of self serving isn’t it. Create smaller spaces, provided little to no visitor parking etc then fine people who park in what little space there is available. In Moncrieff the visitor parking is almost non existent. What little space there is seems to be taken up by residents who have more cars that fit into their garages or by the business I mentioned in my original post. This means visitors have to find somewhere to park, generally a non visitor parking, then receive a fine. Madness.

Sound like this posters problem is not illegal unregistered cars but this specific business whom as I read it is the crux of the problem.

So begs the question have you raised concerns about the actual business rather than the side effect which is the cars.

Hi JC. Absolutely have raised the concern and I am waiting on a response from Minister Rattenbury’s office. Completely appreciate that one should remedy the cause rather than the symptom, however I’ve heard from a number of other people about unregistered cars being parked around suburban streets and I am curious as to how people manage to navigate around this problem.
