Ask RiotACT: Trees on Mr Fluffy blocks?

Ask RiotACT

Hi all,

I live close to a couple of Mr Fluffy blocks which I believe are due for demolition soon. They both have a few beautiful backyard trees a fair distance from the houses which would certainly meet the height requirements to be regulated trees. Does anyone know whether these trees will be felled when the houses go? My inner cynic says that the developers with dollar signs in their eyes would have asked the government for that to be the case.

Thanks!

I thought the plan was to remove roughly a foot of soil from the blocks, .

The Australian Metric Conversion Act was passed in 1970. I’m pretty sure the ACT Government is not holding out against it.

For the Fluffy block down the road from us they left all the trees as is. In fact not only that, they left the entire garden and all landscaping in tact as well. (This is a fluffy block that has since been on the market and sold)

All they did was scrape out the exact footprint of the house, nothing else was touched. I remember reading a while back they were going to remove the top 1m of soil from each block… not sure what happened to that plan.

That is good to hear. The blocks near me do have lovely established gardens. Thanks.

I thought the plan was to remove roughly a foot of soil from the blocks, but that would have been extremely costly for little benefit (as opposed to demolishing previously cleaned houses with no loose asbestos detected…) given that the older suburbs are probably laced with asbestos due to it’s widespread use in other building materials anyway.

Provided they or their roots aren’t affected by the “scorched earth” policy (dig out house footprint plus 1 metre all around) and they aren’t knocked around by the demolition machinery on site, they should be left alone by the actual building removal process. That’s not to say a developer couldn’t subsequently get rid of them.
