Andrew Barr has announced that bankmecu have signed up for some land rent action.

The ACT Labor Government continues to increase the opportunity for Canberrans to achieve home ownership, today announcing bankmecu as another provider of finance through the ACT’s nation-leading Land Rent Scheme.

Since its commencement in 2008, the Land Rent Scheme has proven an attractive option for more than 1000 low-income Canberra families wishing to achieve the dream of home ownership at a more affordable price.

Lovers of humour will be thrilled to know Andrew has announced a new Affordable Housing Action Plan is underway for release in 2012.

Good to see. When I did the land rent course early this year, they claimed that a few of the major lenders were looking at getting in to land rent properties as well. Would be good to see a bit more competition in this area as CPS are pretty strict with their criteria for these.

I’ll give an unsolicated plug for BankMECU. I’ve been banking with them for a while now (they were the original CSIRO credit union many eons ago). They’ve set the standard for ethical, responsible and sustainable community bank. In fact, in 2010 Ethical Investor recognised MECU as Australia’s most sustainable small company of the year and are pretty competitive on interest rates and fees. They also support environmenal initatives such as purchasing land for conservation for carbon off-setting against home and vehicle loans taken out by MECU customers.

So, it doesn’t surprise me that BankMECU has decided to support the ACT government’s Land Rent Scheme. Good on ’em.

Nope, I don’t work for ’em. I’m just one happy, slightly more ethical and greener BankMECU customer!
