Best of Canberra - Burritos

Burritos are seriously the best. Whether it’s for lunch, dinner or even a cheeky snack, a good burrito will always hit the spot.

My favourite thing about burritos is their versatility. You can be healthy and skip the cheese or you can go the whole hog with double meat, cheese and sour cream. If you like it spicy, you can get the ‘three chilli’ sauce or if you’re more on the mild side, hold the jalapenos please.

When it comes to burritos, there really is something for everyone and this week, I want to know where you get yours.

For me, the key to a good burrito is all in the construction. You could have the best quality ingredients in the world, but if it’s wrapped up the wrong way – well, there really is nothing worse than biting into a burrito and only getting a mouthful of sour cream. No one wants to end up like this guy.

So tell me Canberra – who constructs the best burrito in town?

To vote, let me know who makes your favourite burritos in the comments below. I’ll try the two most popular places and let you know the verdict in next Monday’s Taste Off article.

My problem with Zambreros is that you have to be pretty picky about which one you go to. The Manuka one is so bad. They give you hardly any filling (like, seriously, less than what the standard should be) and won’t give you more (apparently 3cm of thinly spread beans is more than enough) unless you pay extra. The Zambreros in Civic has always been pretty good. The Braddon one was the best but it’s closed down now 🙁

Yeah had that problem with the Jamison store so stopped going. Braddon was good with a bonus tango deal.

Zambrero, Guzman and Mad Mex are all reasonable. Would be interesting to have an independent sole operator in the mix but unfortunately don’t know of one in Canberra.

There used to be Francisco’s in Manuka, but unfortunately that closed a while ago. It wasn’t the best, but it was good because it was the only one.

The last time I went to Zamberos (Gungahlin) I asked for a burrito without the rice. What I got was literally the size of an apple. Lesson learned.

Lamb burrito with guac from Zambreros gets my vote. Love the combo of chipotle sauce with herb and garlic.

Fish burrito from GYG gets my second vote.

Recently I had Salsas up on the Gold Coast, I really hope they open a store in Canberra one day.

Gusman y Gomez.

I’m interested to see how the result of this Best of Canberra burritos taste off compares to the taco taste off earlier this year. I think it’s much harder to find a life-changing burrito than it is to find a good taco, especially since tacos are on the menu at a lot of bars/tapas-y places.

Burritos always seem a bit more low-brow (has anyone ever eaten a gourmet burrito? I’d love to try one) compared to tacos.

A great burrito is defined by the tortilla. Zambreros used to do it for me, but now when I want a great burrito I go to Beach Burrito in the city. Try the flying pig – it’s good.

Tried a Flying Pig there yesterday. Not too bad. Good balance of ingredients. Beans were a bit crunchy & chicken was bland breast meat. Will go back and try their fish ones.

Zambreros. Plus they have that plate4plate social program. The Errindale store is consistantly good.

Haven’t been back in a long while. Was good at the start but then they started using dodgy meat, this odd textureless slurry with gluggy rice. There’s a reason their stores in Civic don’t have lines anymore.

Guzman is usually good.

+1 for Guzman y Gomez. Streets ahead of Mad Mex & Zambreros.

Mad Mex. They have really great salsas – although I do love that Guzman has a fish option.

Maccas mate. Get one of them crispy chicken wrap thingys…pretty much the same as a burrito, specially if you get a spicy one…and you dontt even have to get out of the car. Thats a win in my book.

An airbag is not going to protect you against that self inflicted gaffe.

From the vego perspective historically its been gusman, zambreros then mad Mex for me. Had a few poor gusmans of late so its back to zambreros.

The one with grilled chicken is healthier (or a lot less unhealthier) but yes, they are a tasty treat a couple of times a year and the packaging is usually mess free.

God help us all.

+1 for GyG. Guac necessary.

I like Mad Mex but that is mostly because they were the first to do wholemeal rice and tortillas. In civic I go for Guzman y Gomez but in Belconnen I go to Mad mex.

Zambreros!

Guzman y Gomez. Streets ahead of Zambreros

I reckon Beach Burrito does a pretty good job 🙂

Zambreros v Gusmany Gomez would be the match up here, I reckon.
